£90 for half head highlights at Toni & Guy - would I be mad to pay this???

My hair urgently needs attention as have horrible dark roots (attractively streaked with grey) owing to not having had hair coloured since well before DS3 was born.

Have made appointment at Toni & Guy in Islington on Friday (chosen because they are convenient to home, and because have had good haircut there earlier this year) but am really not sure about the price! What do you all think? And if this is too much to pay, what else could I do to sort out my hair? Am a bit nervous of colouring it at home, not to mention unsure how I would do it with DS3 around!

Ooh, lots of opinions here, and lots of useful suggestions.

I have decided to take a deep breath and pay this rather exorbitant price this time and then look for a cheaper alternative for next time. Thanks for the suggestion of Holistic Hair, bahhumbug, I will check them out!

I'm not really a fan of home colouring - I used to colour my hair at home all the time when I was younger but no matter what colour I start out with it always ends up a really straw-like washed-out blonde colour, so I stopped doing it in the end and started having highlights instead. Had a brief flirtatioin last year with semi-permanent colour instead but found the colours quite dull, so went back to highlights. (Am a bit of a creature of habit in that respect!)

(The £90 is just for the highlights, by the way, doesn't include the cut.)

Anyway, you've all been really helpful, and it's obviously a subject close to everyone's heart!

I pay £90 for a full head, but that's outside London.

Within London I expect £90 is fairly average.

I've been to 3 different T&Gs over the years and had appalling haircuts at all of them. Think they rest on their "name" a bit. If it's close to home and convenient though...

but if there;s another, independent hairdresser nearby, you might get a better cut/colour there.

I think you are mad, £90 would feed me and bean for 2 and a bit weeks.

Barking!

I'm a photographer and recently as I edited my wedding images I thought to myself what amazing hair the bride had. Very natural but with lots of lights in it. Turns out it was all out of a bottle from t & G Islington. Looked amazing and I had absolutely no idea it was hair dye.

Laquila · 02/07/2015 10:01

I used to pay £80-90 for half head highlights and a cut at Cuts2 on Upper St a good few years ago - don't know if they're still there but they were pretty good. Not perfect, but I have never found anyone to live up to my expectations...which frankly aren't that high!

LadyStark · 02/07/2015 10:58

Headmasters do an offer on Sundays and Mondays that is £89 for half head of highlights, cut and blow dry. I really like it there but imagine it varies branch to branch.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 02/07/2015 11:01

I was paying that 8 years ago in SE London so sounds about right, I pay £70ish now and I'm in a small town.

If you can afford it then go for it Smile

Lancelottie · 02/07/2015 11:01

As this was over 10 years ago, I should think the OP needs another trim by now...

GemmaTeller · 02/07/2015 11:03

I used to pay £160.00 for a full head of highlights and lowlights at Saks (or 270.00 with a spiral perm) when my hair was past my bra strap - absolutely wouldn't go anywhere else.

I think this must be the oldest zombie thread I've ever noticed! Hmm

GemmaTeller · 02/07/2015 11:07

oh, ffs Blush

GinUpGirl · 02/07/2015 11:08

I think that is standard for London sadly. I just paid £95 for a balayage.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 02/07/2015 11:09

Why does this happen? When people resurrect these threads why do they just ignore the big THIS IS A ZOMBIE THREAD warning?HmmConfused

GinUpGirl · 02/07/2015 11:09

Woah I got zombied hard!

WicksEnd · 02/07/2015 11:13

It happened because colourmummy came along to promote a product attempting to disguise it as a genuine post. Badly.

Mimigolightly · 02/07/2015 11:13

Find a cheaper salon for colour and use an expensive one for a cut. There are loads & loads of small, unfashionable looking salons that have fantastically experienced stylists but it's down to trial and error. Go by word of mouth.

ZOMBIR THREAD

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 02/07/2015 11:30

Mimigolightly · 02/07/2015 11:35

Can't see it's a zombie on my phone.

I'll get my coat.

10 yrs old thread - interestingly, it's £91 now or £108 with a senior. You've got to love the recession for some things unless you're a hairdresser
