A four year old's "grown up" bed - how to choose a mattress??

I am trying to work out which mattress I should buy for my ds's new bed - until now he has been in an Ikea junior bed, with the corresponding mattress, which is really just a piece of foam. Does anyone know where I should start?? I am buying him a regular 3' single bed, and everyone from Mothercare to Tescos do mattresses - should he have a Mothercare-type one at his age? Also, they range from £70-odd to £hundreds!! Help appreciated!!

You get what you pay for, largely, with mattresses.

We bought a proper single bed with a sprung mattress for my daughter.

i tend to agree, get a decent mattress if you're planning on the bed to last him.
take him somehwere to try them out and see what he likes

Thank you! Sorry to be dumb but is a sprung mattress best - does that provide most support?

Hi there brand spanking new to MN but recognised a thread I could contribute to! Spent 2 weeks a couple months ago searching for mattress for DS moving from cot to a 3' returned one for £90 as you could feel the springs and eventually hit the middle road with a firm mattress (sprung) from Argos (they're good for delivery/returns if you're not happy) for £130.
