I've been thinking about getting one for DD2's 3rd Birthday, but DH thinks a child would actually get bored with it quite quickly; maybe he's right? maybe 3 is too young to appreciate a camera? Maybe it's one of those things that parents like the idea of their DC having..

Any experiences? Did you get one for your DC only for it to abandoned at the bottom of a toy box after 10 minutes?

well I know that dd2 (who is turning 3 in april) would love one for her birthday but I'm not getting her one as she would become obsessive about it in her own sweet way and I would spend hours downloading and showing her the pictures she has taken of erm....Geckos leg, the curtains, her own bum lol

I have seen said camera at a freinds sons 5th party, and it was a little disapointing IMO, and not really right for a 3 year old. I think they are a little young at 3 to appreciate it, as you said. My dd had a toy camera at that age that flashed and said 'Smile!' 'Say Cheese!' and she played with that thing forever.

Thanks for your replies; I think I'm in agreement with you, Maidamess (and DH I s'pose), having thought about it; a toy camera that's just a toy is really more appropriate.
TR, your DD2 sounds a total darling

I've bought one for ds1's 3rd birthday at the end of the month. It was half price in woolworths, so if it isn't that good, it wasn't too expensive. He is always playing with our digital camera so I think he will love it.

DD1 age 4 has the vtech kidizoom one and loves it! It has games on which also adds to the appeal. Plus it holds lots of pictures and does videos.
DD2 age 3 wants one the same for her 4th Birthday.

Okay, now I'm back on the fence..

If you think your dd would like one then you should get one. YOu could always keep it for christmas or her next birthday if you changed your mind

Having bought a few disposable cameras for DS to use on holiday, we did the sums and worked out that they were costing about £10 a throw with processing, so took the plunge and Santa brought one of these Canon when DS was 3.5, as bare-faced bribery for an incredibly recalcitrant toilet trainer (fine at Nursery, refused point blank at home).

It's a great little camera, and we actually use it instead of our own one. He quickly picked up how to use it - taking photos and playing them back, and is now taking video with it a year later He is a careful child, and it's never been dropped or anything - I think what you're paying for in the Fisher Price cameras is that they're robust and can be dropped and generally abused, but you don't really want to validate that sort of treatment of a camera, whether it looks like a toy or not. And the FP one is really expensive for what it is, if it's the same one I've seen in ELC - I think it can only store a few photos, whereas a normal camera with a big card in it can store 500+. Also with a screen you get instant feedback of the photos that's been taken, rather than waiting for them to be developed or plugged into the computer.

However, having said all that your little one is coming up 3, which might be a leetle bit young to trust with a real camera - maybe get a toy one now and then a real one for Xmas, as another poster has said?

Hope this helps!

this is DD1's camera holds 200 photos.I don't think the fisher price ones holds many.

TheHonEnid · 04/02/2008 11:39

dd1 got that canon powershot for her 8th birthday and its great

I would say 3 is miles too young personally there is no need to go overboard at that age

the kids ones are usually a pile of complte crap

For last Christmas, when DD was 4yo, we got her a proper digital camera. We looked at the children's ones but found them disappointing and felt that she would grow out of it too soon. She was already pretty good with my camera so thought the best option. Hers is a Canon Powershot and it was about the same price as teh Fisher Price one, in a sale - and it is such better quality and will las her far longer.

TBH we don't download all the photos she takes, just some. Some are bizarre pictures of household objects or clips from the TV! Buts ome are really good, really nice photos. People, we have found, are far more willing to strike a pse when DD points the camera at them than if it were an adult.
