No, but read it and found it fascinating (would love to see it) especially as I now live in Eastern Turkey near the border to Iran in the very region that she must have come through.

It is so snowy and cold now that I often imagine how difficult it must have been for her to come over the mountains that loom over our apartment building.
Brrrrrrr!!!!!!

moondog · 01/12/2004 20:55

Thanks Nik! That is so sweet of you!!! I would love it if you could and would reciprocate by bringing something nice back from Turkey for you!

No, dh is not Turkish (Welsh actually like me!) but he works on a European union project her in Van.
There aren't really any other expatriates here, but I am having a daily Turkish lesson and the people are absolutely lovely. So kind and friendly. I've only been here a month as I had the baby not so long ago and wanted to recover before coming out. We'll be here for at least two more years though.

Well, Britain it isn't!!
Most of the people here are quite religious and don't drink for example. Restaurants have reserved spaces for families so that you don't have to eat with single men.
A lot of the women wear headscarves and one or two cover their faces (mostly Iranians from over the border).
There aren't any bars (well, one in a town of 800,000 as far as I know.)
We have our kids here (new baby and 4 year old) but people are much kinder than in Britain.
For example, if we go to a restaurant that is up a flight of stairs, the waiters insist on bringing the pushchair down for us. Also every time we go out to eat someone will descend, pick up the baby and take him off for a cuddle while we eat. It's great!!

nikcola · 01/12/2004 21:08

good, glad you like it there your very brave imo

MTS (assume that is you????) it's just Canadian sellers on amazon.co - here .

misdee · 01/12/2004 21:12

whats this film about?

moondog · 01/12/2004 21:13

I think I was a lot braver staying home and working for three years while dh did various short term jobs around the world!
No, it's lovely here. I have a nice flat and no responsibilities. We eat out every day as it is so cheap and i finally get to focus on my children 100 %.
Days are spent in a pleasant blur of childcare, housework, walks, reading, sewing, satellite tv and the internet. Plus, we go home at least every 8 weeks.
It is so nice for us all to be together after so long apart!!

JanH · 01/12/2004 21:14

moondog, I don't know if this is relevant to you - about a Turkish/British family living on a Turkish island in the Aegean. Might be interesting!

If it won't let you look because you're abroad I will copy and paste it for you.

moondog · 01/12/2004 21:16

Misdee, it is about a woman who marries a (seemingly liberal) Iranian in the USA. He asks her to come back to Iran with him for a short visit (they have a dd by then) but tricks her and tells her he will never go back. In such a society she has no power at all and is stuck for years. Eventually someone helps her escape over the mountains to Turkey with her child in the dead of winter.
