How do you go about valuing a record collection ?

My next door neighbour is in his 60's and has just had a loft clear out. He has found loads of LP's going back to the 1950's. He has asked if I can use the internet to find out the value of his stuff. I know I can look on Ebay but he has loads and it would take an age.

Are there any other ways of getting values for his records. Other websites ?

Thanks

Depends what he's got really. If it's a load of Leo Sayer albums I'd say even a charity shop wouldn't be interested. Are they rare and pristine? I'd ask him to suggest a few he thinks are of value - presumably if he's bought loads he'll know a bit about music - and test them on Ebay.

Sorry, other than lugging them to a second hand shop, don't know what else to suggest really

If he thinks there's anything good there how about cataloguing them and trying a specialist music auction house like this one

am sure there are specialist music mags that list really valuable stuff liek Beatle originals but would need to ask a friend. Hold on.

Kaysleighbells, dp is a bit of a record anorak! We have hundreds and hundreds and he sells loads on ebay. There is a book called Record Collector, Rare Record Price Guide. We have the 2004 edition and it's over 1500 pages long! See if yu can order it from your local library. but the price in there isn't necasarily the price that you would get for it. We recently got £112 for somethign valued at about £60 but sometimes what we get falls far short. Something is only worth what someone would pay for it.
Depending on how many there are, if you could be bothered typing out a list and sending it to me I can spend a couple of hours lazing about, drinking wine, eating chocolate and looking up records for you (didn't mean that - honest )

Or it may be quicker for you to phone!!! Then we could both have the wine and the chocolate!!

hollybet, you're a star. Thanks for the offer. What I need to do is get him to write out what he's got. What info do you need apart from song title and artist ?

We need the condition of the record, classified into
a) mint - this means as new No marks at all on record or sleeve

b) excellent - record shows some signs of having been played but sound quality is not affected. Sleeve may have slight wear or creasing

c) very good - has obviously been played many times but no major deterioration in sound quality depite the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear to sleeve

d) good - the record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeable deteriorated perhaps with distortion. Sleeve - folding, scuffing, discolouration

e) fair - still just playable, not cared for, considerable surface noise, may jump. Sleeve torn, stained/defaced

f) poor - the record will not play properley due to the scratches, cover badly damamged or partly missing

g) bad - record unplayable, might even be broken, only of use as a collection filler.

dp says that to be sold, he wouldn't bother with anything less than very good.

E mail me a list, and I will do what I can, or better still dp will! or if he is writing a list out post it to me, which will save you the hassle of typing it all out again

He has just dictated all that to me - and has called me a cheeky sod for refering to him as an anorak - I rest my case!! Still love him to bits tho' [soppy icon]
