Has anyone used these? Are they any good? can anyone recommend somewhere to get them. I've seen them in classifieds but can't think where now. Have just stuffed old pillow up chimney to stop freezing draught that I wasn't aware of before but now getting down on floor to play with DD, its really tayters down there!

We bought one when we lived in our old house (we had a really old walk-in fireplace). Have to be honest and say it was useless, it kept falling down!

Thanks both of you. Think I will see how the pillow does. Must remember to tell DH its there in case he wants to light the fire! Highly unlikely but you never know.

My dad used to put a peice of hardboard cut to size up ours when we were kids. But that was for the summer to stop the soot! In the winter it was lit as it was the only form of heating in the whole house!!!

Haven't used one but have considered it.

Otherwise I retreat to another room in the house as the cold air dropping down the chimney makes the living room v cold. If I watch TV there, I have a throw to put over me. We used to have a piece of MDF which we put in front of the chimney but it's disappeared now to I know not where.

DH however, likes to light a fire and does so.

All our bedrooms have the original cast iron fireplaces and when we moved in we discovered bundles of old clothes had been stuffed up the chimneys at some time in the past. Needless to say, it was very drafty when we removed the clothes (and also noisy). I got some of those chimney balloons (ad on the back of a home mag I think) and it made a huge difference. They've been in place a few years now and probably could do with being re-inflated but haven't got around to it yet...

Used to stuff paper up ours - and several times lit fire with it still in place. Result - smoke filled room in seconds!

We have just had mil stuff ours with newspaper/carrier bags stuffed into black bin liner....it is very effective and easy to pull out if needed....also you could cut a piece of cardboard to fit the hole to stop the soot coming down....
