Can anyone recomend a car which has 7 seats and a large boot?

We will have 4 kids go away alot at weekends, so we need a boot that can take a double pushair and weekend bags, and a car that can seat 3 adults and 4 kids at the same time. Thanks

XC90- volvo
X5 - BMW
ML - Mercedes
Zafira - I think?
The new Discovery - possibly 7 seats but perhaps 5 can't remember

Dropdeadfred · 21/01/2008 16:29

Zafiras boot is tiny when using 7 seats

kando · 21/01/2008 16:40

Not sure there are any 7 seaters with "big" boots!

Galaxy, Previa, Sedona (I think?), Grand Chrysler, Q7 (oh if only ... !)

LizP · 21/01/2008 16:44

Discovery boot also tiny when using 7 seats - although you could just have six seats up. We have done this for short trips, but doesn't seem very safe as I worry about luggage flying about in just a little shunt.

bigshopper · 21/01/2008 22:48

We love our Chrysler Grand Voyager. Plenty of room for 7 and luggage. Can also fit 5 car seats in the back if you're taking lots of kids.

kando · 22/01/2008 09:58

bigshopper - that's the one I meant! Had a look at one of those and loved the size and versatility of it, plus the size of the boot. Sadly, the "bank" said know - iyswim!

sugar34plum · 22/01/2008 10:00

i agree the chyrsler grand voyager is the best.

Enid · 22/01/2008 10:01

doesnt the merc estate have 7 seats?

stick a roof box on

my mate has a bmw x5 with 7 seats and the boot is not huge

nortynamechanger · 22/01/2008 10:15

Q7 has a tiny boot when all 7 seats up - should have seen the look on the salesmans face when I said "can I just try my pram in there?"

(salesman)

XC90 can get my 4 wheeled off roader, picnic for 7, various wellies, coats etc in when all 7 seats up.

Looked at a Citron C-crosser (?) (which was reviewed on fith gear last night) the back 2 seats look dodgy to me, only for very occasional use I would have thought. So much cheaper than XC90 though.

Enid · 22/01/2008 10:16

I really want an xc90

nortynamechanger · 22/01/2008 10:18

Also the seats just fold down, a gf has one (Citroen c7? maybe) where you have to take them out if you want boot space - huge faff and no good for emergencies (like will be late can you collect their DCs from school when you collect your own DCs).

Surr3ymummy · 22/01/2008 10:19

We've got a Volvo V70 estate with seven seats - but 2 of those are in the boot space and face rearwards. It's fine for us, as we have 3 children, so we have the flexibility of the big boot for luggage or dogs etc. We use the additional 2 seats in the boot for extra kids at school run time - as they're rearwards I don't think they're particularly suitable for long journeys.

I think with 4 kids you need something bigger - with all seats facing forward, but then as other posters have said you don't get much boot space left. My friend has the Hyundai 7 seater - that might be worth looking at.

mumlove · 22/01/2008 13:13

shoshe recommends the mazda bongo, do a search on here and it says everything about them.

Vacua · 22/01/2008 13:14

bugatti veyron

seeker · 22/01/2008 13:16

Bongos are fabfabfab - but don't have a huge amount of boot space when you're using all 8 (count them - 8!) seats! You can get roof boxes for them, though.

Slacker · 22/01/2008 13:47

norty - which off roader can you get in the back of your XC90? I'd just about decided not to get anything bigger than a Maclaren buggy as I''ll need all 7 seats up when 5th baby arrives, but if there's something that fits I'll consider it.

WendyWeber · 22/01/2008 13:53

What's your budget?

PrettyCandles · 22/01/2008 13:57

New shape Galaxy has 7 full-size fold-down seats and a decent boot with all seats up. It would probably take a double buggy, but I don't think it could take many bags as well. Unless you want a minibus, you may have to go for a roofbox. You can fit almost as much into a good roofbox as you can into an estate boot, as long as you pack in squashy bags not rigid suitcases.

Guess what we have .

miobombino · 22/01/2008 15:49

We have 4 children and drive an XC90. For holidays we keep one seat flat, making an l shaped boot. Next to whoever is then left in the third row we put a soft holdall, but it is lashed down securely. (There are lots of thoughtful little things like lashing rings etc).
We haven't needed a roofbox, even though we bought it when ds3 was under a year old and using a P&T as his main pushchair.

it drives like a car, which is an imporatant factor for me, unlike say a Voyager which is a bit wallowy and not very nippy on a motorway, (not to mention wider too i think). It's not that i want to burn lots of fuel and pollute the environment, but when overtaking a humungous lorry i want to pull away sharpish for safety.

We are going to change our car next year and I have looked at

another XC90

Grande Espace - looks good for a people carrier but actually not much if any more spacious than XC90 to my mind

Merc R Class - currently a six seater but new run will have 7 seats. However the middle row isn't very adjustable. Your central 3 passengers would have lots of leg room - nice but not needed if they're kids - but that row doesn't move forward much to capitalise on the large boot you'd get if you weren't always using the back row.

ML Merc - no longer made with 7 seats so not an option.

Merc GL - MASSIVE and v. expensive, so not an option.

X5 - ? Have test driven a diesel. Great to drive but would my boot be smaller than XC90 ? Not sure.

nortynamechanger · 22/01/2008 22:33

slacker it is an oldie I'm afraid.

I think, despite this picture, that they have changed the chassis a bit.

I can't have a 3 wheeler for many reasons including too many rabbit holes in my paddocks, they get stuck and tip up forwards if Mummy is not paying attention and carries on walking and Ds has low muscle tone and the hammock/very reclined seats are uncomfortable. DD didn't like them either tbh.

To get it in I do have to detach top from frame particluarly combined with all the picnic/other luggage, but it is very simple to do.

Slacker · 23/01/2008 13:32

Thanks - good to know that something bigger than a buggy can fit in the boot, although mine is always full of school bags and sports kit so will be tricky trying to squeeze a pram in too!

jb707 · 24/01/2008 15:32

Has anyone got a Viano or Caravelle?

OP posts:
sandyballs · 24/01/2008 15:39

Mitsubishi Grandis. 7 seater, reasonable boot with all seats up, huge boot with 2 down. You might need a roof box but I think you will with most 7 seaters if all are in use.
