Guitars for beginners on a Budget

Hi there, dh would like to learn how to play the guitar.
Obviously there is no telling if he really will enjoyo it, etc...so, at this point, we don't want to spend much at all.
There are some cheap, fullsized one on E-bay...I realise that they won't be brill quality, but would one of those do for a complete beginner? Or would they spoil any joy in learning to play?

My DS started with a cheap full size one from the Works, because I was convinced he'd give up. He didn't, and we have now bought a dearer one. The cheap one was perfectly adequate to start with, even for lessons.

Thank you Tallulah ( and is that you tallulahsmum?)

dp says you can get a not bad yamaha one (fg700) for about £100 that he would recommend. in most music shops so you could try out before buying

he says if you can stretch to a solid top guitar that would be good

bramblebooks · 20/01/2008 21:08

I picked one up at a car boot for a fiver! It's doing well for ds (7). ds (11) is starting on one from ikea which was about £15. If they really get going then they can progress to a yamaha one. The ones they're playing are smaller than full sized, so they can get their hands around them.

3andnomore · 20/01/2008 21:10

erm...£100 is kind a lot of money for now....

was thinking under £50...for the start, lol

yes I am with you 3and! I think dp is on a different planet as far as guitars are concerned

mckenzie · 20/01/2008 21:28

3andnomore - where do you live? I might be able to help.

mckenzie · 20/01/2008 21:30

just clicked on your nickname and now know that you live in Corby. So my guitar for sale in North London is not much good huh?

3andnomore · 20/01/2008 21:44

but thanks for thinking of me

Woolworths has a selection like this one. Very reasonable price and has the bag etc with it.

Pixel · 22/01/2008 16:21

You could look out for a second-hand one as I should imagine loads of people pay out for a guitar and then give up after a few lessons. Dd has just started lessons so I thought I would have a go too but dh's guitars were too big for me (due to my abnormally short arms no doubt ) so he dragged out an ancient smaller one. It's got no varnish left and has been buried in the back of the cupboard under the stairs for years but was still perfectly in tune!
Btw, dh says nylon strings easier for a beginner if that helps.

3andnomore · 22/01/2008 20:59

Thank you Pixel

when i first took lessons i just used my sisters old spanish guitar, after a few weeks i got a yamaha fsomething. the sound was so much better and easier to use.

if he's using a tutor, they should have some for his to play about with.

southeastastra · 22/01/2008 21:05

him

3andnomore · 22/01/2008 21:07

he wants to teach himself...via DVD....

I am really annoyed aat myself, as I used to have a guitar, but decided to sell it. Should have kept hold of it....sigh...

If you want a great value electric go on e-buyer. I got one for dd it included full size guitar, strap, amp, string set, case, leads and plectrums. here It's a great guitar (I play too) and she is about to take her grade 2 on it so not just for absolute beginners. They also do other acoustic and classical guitars.
Argos also do some great cheap starter guitars
