oh so why was my hoover smoking and why is it now dead?

/slightly panicky as have no spare funds for new hoover.

Its a panasonic with two clear cycloney swirly things.

hoover hasnt sounded well for a little while - have cleaned filters, checked pipe not blocked etc, pipe is blocking easily. Anyway, it wasnt picking up just now and it started smelling stronger and stronger of smoke. So took it to front door - checked, there was a little bit of a blockage of fluff at the inlet - but nothing hoover should have struggled with. So cleared it, put it back together. Turned hoover on (ready to fling it out of front door if it got alarming)- it started with a bit of a surge then turned itself off.

so help please - help. 3 cats, and very long hairded dd mean frequent hoovering needed.

I know, I know.....!!!!

My dyson was exactly the same..I ran over lead and various other stuff as im a nightmare when hoovering , anyway basically the belt snapped thus nothing being sucked up and hence the smell of burning...

Get the hoover guy out and it will be fixed in a jiffy. . Ours was £50 inc any parts it needed to fix.

BTW my dyson was actually smoking. . I nearly launched it out of the window for fear it was ignighted..!!!!

suzycreamcheese · 18/01/2008 14:34

cause smoking kills?

sorry mine is on the blink too no wisdom but i guess like you i will have to repair....

OrmIrian · 18/01/2008 14:36

Needs a new belt I should think.

Bloody hate hoovers I've had dysons and a very fancy panasonic thing and they'd all let me down. I have a Henry now and he is very reliable but gawd I hate heaving him upstairs. And he gets tangled up in his cable forcing my to swear at him.

oh fabby I reckon I can get dh to change the belt - hes done it before - can't remember why though

had just dug the argos catalogue out to look for replacement hoover. They've come down in price loads since we bought this one but I'd much rather repair it if we can (well actually I wouldnt cos I love new stuff - but I know its the right thing to do)

Built in obsolescence

Shhhh · 18/01/2008 14:41

yeah, in hindlight we could have changed the belt and the dyson bloke left us a new one spare but at the time we had no idea what it was..also dh isn't the diy type at all....

BTW, remember a hoover is for ife

BadKitten · 18/01/2008 14:43

right. I have instructions. I have screwdriver and I have 20 mins before have to go and get dd and friend from school.....
I'll post results of investigation

Buring rubber smell? Needs a new belt. If it is an upright go to your local market/hardware guy. He will get a belt for a couple of quid and fit it yourself.

Don't know about cylinders though.

Sunshinemummy · 18/01/2008 14:46

If you need a new hoover I can recommend Miele. They don't do uprights but they are fab.

BadKitten · 18/01/2008 14:48

dh phoned. He says that the fact that it makes no noise at all means that its not just a belt problem cos motor would turn but I reckon if belt jammed then fuse could blow?
/hopeful

not belts - both are fine and turn easily.
bum.

Do they last a long time Sunshine? they seem quite pricey in comparison.

Mine is new but my cleaner specifically asked for it as she has used them before and they are fab, reliable and long-lasting. It's very good, much better than our old bagless upright.

BadKitten · 18/01/2008 15:07

right.
have taken motor cover off. Its very interesting but theres nothing obvious and I fear we may not get it back together now

BadKitten · 18/01/2008 15:07

brilliant - thanks Sunshine. Must dash!

We have declared it dead. long live the vacuum.
When dh got home we replaced the fuse which we (I) thought was what had ultimately given up. We left the cover off so we could see what was happening to the motor. We switched it on and the motor fired up - scary sparks flew out of it outside of the motor casing. Shouldnt really have done that so we declared it dangerous.

So now am looking for a hoover that can do the stairs and also suck up vast amounts of pet hair for under £100. I find bagless ones a great incentive for my can't be bothered days as I find the amount of dirt I suck up fascinating

...Get a dyson . I agree, I so luurrrvvvvve seeing what I have hoovered up ..!!!
