Here is our old kettle to give you an idea of what I think is beautiful. I really love it and it has just died but we can't buy another the same because tbh it was a bit crap. Very noisy and has not lasted at all well.

So does anyone know of nicely designed kettle that is also good quality? And doesn't cost £50 ideally, we could do without the expense atm

Don't know franny but the 65% reduction of energy is what appealed to me

ComeOVeneer · 14/01/2008 21:36

Damn amazon have it cheaper.

FrannyandZooey · 14/01/2008 21:38

Comeoveneer - Ive recently bought that water heater from Costco - wasnt that much though - about £40 I think.
Im not 100% sure whether I like it - when you make a cup of tea, its sort of frothy and the cup ends up with " tea scum". Also it doesnt totally boil the water, so if like me you like milky tea, your cuppa isnt too hot for long. Also, the filter has started flashing that it needs to be changed after about 20 days (I live in a very hard water area). So if I did bother to change it now, It would cost me a fair bit in filters. Im debating whether to keep it or not.

I too am fed up with kettles- ive gone through about 4 in 2 yrs!!

FrannyandZooey · 14/01/2008 21:44

ah

erm

comeoveneer did you see the reviews on amazon?

I would get this if I had to get a new one:

www.amazon.co.uk/Russell-Hobbs-Energy-Saving-Thermal/dp/B000P61M9W/ref=sr_1_19?ie=UTF8&s=kitchen&qid =1200346850&sr=1-19

ComeOVeneer · 14/01/2008 21:46

Oh dear, perhaps it wasn't a great choice then .

ComeOVeneer · 14/01/2008 21:47

Thank god I ordered it from JL, think I will just return it unopened

FrannyandZooey · 14/01/2008 21:48

WCLass that one has awful reviews as well

Comeoveneer I am sorry, did you order it already?

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 14/01/2008 21:49

oh cross posts yes perhaps that would be best!

although in among the criticisms some people liked it

Only read the op, Franny we have that kettle in cream, lovely looking (was on our wedding list) but rubbish, and actually pretty dangerous to use (water bubbles over when pouring if you try pouring straight away, and flicks on if you brush anything past it!).

This isn't pretty, but lentil weavery

FrannyandZooey · 14/01/2008 21:51

do you find it very noisy as well? it does look nice, doesn't it?

OP posts:
BumperliciousIsOneHotMother · 14/01/2008 21:51

Hi JBM I think that water scum on tea comes from water that hasn't boiled enough IME.

(Hope you are ok btw!)

ComeOVeneer · 14/01/2008 21:51

Is a stove top kettle more environmentally friendly than an electrical one?

BumperliciousIsOneHotMother · 14/01/2008 21:53

Yes noisy too, and takes a long time to boil. We also have the toaster to match, which is also all looks and no substance! If you have bread or bread type item with is less than a square acre you burn your cuticles trying to get it out!

FrannyandZooey · 14/01/2008 21:55

our toaster is also horrible

as is our cooker

in fact the only appliance I like is our Miele washing machine, which we bought after getting through about 4 in 10 years - a BIG price, but 5 years guarantee - it's fine so far

ComeOVeneer · 14/01/2008 21:56

Tis 50/50 on this eco friendlier one.

FrannyandZooey · 14/01/2008 21:56

COV I am sorry, I don't know the answer

AllBuggiedOut · 14/01/2008 21:57

Don't get the Alessi one - pretty but lasted no longer than the Dualit or many cheapo ones we've had over the years . Think the answer is to get an Aga and its matching kettle.

ComeOVeneer · 14/01/2008 22:07

Research suggests an electric kettle is between 35%-50% more energy efficient than a stove top.

BumperliciousIsOneHotMother · 14/01/2008 22:07

We live in rented accommodation, so not much comparison, but, although I have only had it a few months I love my zanussi washing machine! It has lots of settings, one has a moon and stars next to it which might mean you can use it a night (if I read the manual...) and a delayed start

Jennster · 14/01/2008 22:14

We've had a philips kettle for years and is really good. Looks like the JL short round one linked further down, but not seen it in a shop for a while. Mil had her's for at least 10 years

Hi Bumper! Im fine!
Perhaps we'll all be the kettle huns!
Not many of them have had good reviews though have they? It seems a kettle with a filter is no good if you live in a hard water area as they need replacing too often.

Cremolafoam · 14/01/2008 22:55

big gay kettle
