Firstly, do they sell free range eggs and chickens and how is the pricing for those?

What do you alwasy buy there as its better than elsewhere?
What are your best buys pricewise from there?

What fresh fish do they tend to have, I'm after some salmon fillets.
Thanks

Will depend on the size of store but they wil have free range egss and chicken.

They wil have fresh salmon fillets, most stores have a fresh fish counter.

They seem to do a lot of pies.

I prefer asda or tesco as the Morrisons near me doesn't have a few of the basic things I buy regularly like pizza bases. Its just that it is a smaller store with less choice .

Scramble · 14/01/2008 10:56

I've not got a clue about prices but they aren't much different to anywhere else, always got a few offers on the ailse ends.

JossStick · 14/01/2008 10:56

I love Morrisons fresh fruit & veg. Also they do lovely salads and the fish counter here is better than sains or Tesco.

Eggs are free range but don't know about Chickens.

filthymindedvixen · 14/01/2008 10:57

they sell free range eggs and chicken but chicken supply is limited and yesterday, for example, in our town they had sold out.

The fish counter is quite good,

TBH it is not the nearest supermarket to us, but it is cheap so we go there to stock up on tins, fruit juices dry goods etc. I never seem to find their fresh fruit and veg stays fresh very long at all.

They have many hidden gems in the wine dept

thanks scramble
the one I'm heading out to is a large one so hoping that choice on basic things wont be an issue

We shop in Morrisons sometimes. Our one has a very good fish counter (although it used to make me want to be sick when I went in when pregnant as it is very near the entrance).

They do have free-range eggs - can't remember how much they are but either average or a bit less. Not sure about chickens btu again pretty sure there are free range ones.

We find the meat in general is good, often better than Tesco.

I find the main advantage is that there aren't so many nice impulse buys ie no clothes, toys etc like in Tesco, Asda, Sainsburys, so you end up spending less.

Scramble · 14/01/2008 10:58

When I say basic I mean my basics, its fine oon normal basics IYSWIM, my MIL prefers it as it has everything she buys. I just have a few things I regularly buy that they don't stock.

filthymindedvixen · 14/01/2008 10:58

We got some good BOGOFS yesterday (nice ham , cheese, bread etc)

purplemonkeydishwasher · 14/01/2008 10:58

just checked my fridge-
6 medium FR eggs: 1.28
can't comment on chicken as we do't tend to buy it.
ours has a fish counter but, again, we tend to not buy anything from it.
i think like any shop you get used to a place and know the best buys (if i went to tesco i's be lost!)

Cappuccino · 14/01/2008 10:59

I used to go to Morrisons but shop online now because I don't have the time

their fish is usually v good; ditto fruit and veg

dunno about eggs

booze very good esp wines and spirits

but it did usually work out cheaper than Asda for things

WowOoo · 14/01/2008 10:59

I find it a bit hit and miss. But, for your basics it's lots cheaper and have had lovely meat and fish from there before.

fondant4000 · 14/01/2008 11:03

You'd be surprised I think. Ours has the best fish counter of any of the supermarkets. I know a lot of people who go there specifically for the fish.

Lots of organic and free range stuff - including eggs, milk and chickens (around £5 a chicken I think). Fruit and veg good. Best bread and baguettes too.

I shop there most of the time and find it about 10% cheaper than Tesco and generally better quality. Tesco has better deals on beer generally

I like the no clothes/toys - quicker to get round and no impulse buying.

BettySpaghetti · 14/01/2008 11:09

If you like olives buy their olives in the pre-weighed tubs (usually near the deli counter) -either the green and black olives with herbs and garlic, or the green olives with red peppers and chilli (spicy but gorgeous)

chibi · 14/01/2008 11:10

it has free range soil association approved chicken.

i did a weekly shop there buying a lot of 'surplus' things + it still worked out cheaper than my regular tesco shop. i am converted.

TrinityRhinosDhWonHerAnIPOD · 14/01/2008 11:13

well goodness me
sounds like I should rush down there
Thanks very much for all your replies everyone, it has all been very helpful
I will be making a list today and then going to morrisons either today or tommorow

the no impulse buying is a very good thing for me

BumperliciousIsOneHotMother · 14/01/2008 11:19

I have conducted a study and their bran flakes are better than any other supermarkets'

UnquietDad · 14/01/2008 11:25

Morrisons produce is actually not bad. They need to work on their presentation issues. It looks like a chav-store like a Lidl or Aldi, whereas it is more on a par with Tesco or Sainsbury's.

moyasmum · 14/01/2008 11:31

I like morrisons and generally have no problem finding free range/organic stuff.

Like everyone says ,the fish counter is v good and the staff always seem to be switched on and helpful.

I find the other supermarkets unappetizing when i visit (generally for clothes or kids party stuff).

Scramble · 14/01/2008 11:32

Our Morrisons isn't like lidls at all, they have all the market style canopies and carts. Its all very honest we are wholesome and local and look at our pies.

S101 · 14/01/2008 11:33

Fresh food is good and probably best selection out the supermarkets. The assistants are normally very helpful.

Layout of the store aren't particular good, our local store crams everything in and the aisles are really narrow.

The offers are very good.

Offer some organic range now if you like it. Didn't a while ago, but getting more in.

Some of their fruit and veg can be expensive but when the offers are on it is good.

Flowers are excellent, good price and good value.

Petrol is good as well we have a petrol card and use this to fill up the two cars, when the petrol card is full we get a £5 shopping voucher to use in store, which I tend to save to use for big shops or christmas.

ShrinkingViolet · 14/01/2008 11:36

I've only ever been in one Morrisons where the fish counter wasn't horrendously smelly (and that one is only because I know the manager and they override the "only change the ice once a week" and "don't worry about emptying and cleaning the drip trays" policies they have). The actual fish is nice, I could never buy it if it's been sitting there though. Fish counters should never ever smell.
However, I use our local Morrisons a lot - the BOGOFs are good, and the fruit and veg is decent quality.

InLoveWithSweenyTodd · 14/01/2008 11:49

Morrisons fish section is v good.
Re veg, far cheaper than Tesco or Sainsburys, although beware of bumper packs of mandarins and the like. I am fed up of having to chuck half ot them in the bin only the next day after buying.
Our Morrisons is rather smart, clean and spacious and generally very comfortable to shop in, except on Saturdays when is like an idiots' convention. But I suppose all supermarkets are like that on Saturdays .
I would give it a try definitely.
