There are loads of 'good wine' books you could buy and perhaps one of those flash corkscrews? Some posh bottle stops? Some good wine? Did all that for my Dad for his last birthday.

Does he do hill type walking? If so, could you get him one of those 'sticks' to walk with (I don't mean a wooden one, but you can get proper ones from outdoor shops).

codswallop · 23/11/2004 11:38

he has a stick
and I dont hink he woudl need a ntoher bottle openeer
good tries though S keep em coming

Oooh i was gonna start a thread like this.

Mind if i ask on here Cod ???

Gobbledigook · 23/11/2004 11:38

If he does proper walking - what about a nice hipflask. Or you could get some walking socks or a really nice proper fleece from an outdoors shop.

Sorry, it all sounds really boring but what else can you get for walking wine lovers?

CountessDracula · 23/11/2004 11:39

Get him a 3d wines membership. You buy him a row of vines in a vineyard (he can choose where, they have many) and then you can go and visit the vineyard and pick up your wine if you want or they will deliver to Ardres (nr calais) or to your doorstep.

So he could combine wine with travel (to pick it up) and walking (if he chooses a vineyard in good walking country)

Website here
DH's dad bought him a 5 year membership a while ago it has been fab

Gobbledigook · 23/11/2004 11:39

Gobby is fine! Rather apt actually!

Gobbledigook · 23/11/2004 11:40

CD - you're miles better at this than me!

motherinferior · 23/11/2004 11:40

Oh yes, one of my best mates has that and she's VERY impressed with it.

Gobbledigook · 23/11/2004 11:40

You should be a personal shopper - you could earn a fortune thinking of and buying presents for everyone!

codswallop · 23/11/2004 11:41

ta c d but 80 is too much after his lavish 70th b day celebs.

hmm walking ideas good though

It;s fab. We go on day trip on the tunnel to pick the wine up usually.

PILs have one too, they swap the vines each year (so do we, we have had Montagny 1ere Cru, Fleurie and something else can't remember) and they visit all the vineyards.

CountessDracula · 23/11/2004 11:41

Oooh would LOVE to be personal shopper! How do you go about that then?

CountessDracula · 23/11/2004 11:42

Cod club together with your brother and get it, he will love it

codswallop · 23/11/2004 11:43

I never spend even 40 quid on my dad
we have strict limits in our family!

SantaFio2 · 23/11/2004 11:43

that sounds fun CD

coddy thos fold up lightweight chairs are good, with a strap on to take walking with you

SantaFio2 · 23/11/2004 11:44

they can be as little as 7.50 i think. wes pend about 10-15 quid on our family members. 20 is a very big push

jude2105 · 23/11/2004 11:44

still on the walking theme what about one of those hang round the neck see-thru thingies to put the map in (so it doesn't get wet)? Book on walks in his local area? on the wine front, a crate? some of those send off for ones advertised in broadsheets are good - interesting selection.

CountessDracula · 23/11/2004 11:45

How much do you want to spend?

Gobbledigook · 23/11/2004 11:46

Coddy - don't tell me you can't get a gift out of this lot!! What about the fold up chair (£7.50ish) and a hip flask - bet you could get both for £20 if that's not too much.

Don't know what to get my Dad - we only buy table presents and then just gifts for the kids. He, like you Dad, is into walking and wine but he's got all my suggestions!

codswallop · 23/11/2004 11:47

lol gobster mys friend deos " table presents" yes we have a 15 quid linke when we accrued 7 grandchildren and my brother and sil dont geta nything or give us antything ( my sister and I ignored his rule)

a weekend break for him and your Mum somewhere where they can go for long walks - brecon beacons / devon / or on a vineyard (think there's on on the Isle of Wight that has B&B)..
Books on wine tasting

SantaFio2 · 23/11/2004 11:48

you can also buy those bags which carry a bottle of wine and two plastic glasses, millets sell them
