They are lovely but so expensive so I'm wondering if it's worth it or if I'll have to get a full size wardrobe by the time dd is 2, 3, 4 (what age?).

I'm now getting concerned about my use of an apostrophe on years - I'll wait for enlightenment from a pedant!

no apostrophe in years..but I guess if you get a wardrobe where you can remove the shelves to enable full length dresses or coats, it'd last longer

I think it would depend on whether it is for a girl or boy. Boys tend to only hang shirts / trousers and they are not very long. I suppose long dresses need a taller wardrobe sooner.

I still don't have a wardrobe for ds1 and he's 4, there's just nothing that needs hanging up! Maybe different for girlie stuff, but still better off an adult wardrobe that you can put 2 rails in plus drawers etc (like that range from Ikea).
I bought 2 big chest of drawers from Ikea and they've been fab, also useful for nappies, blankets, dressing up gear etc.
