Dd2 is now too big for her baby car seat, she is 16m and nearly 10kg, so I need to buy a 2nd stage car seat. My problem is we dont live near somewhere we can try the seats in our car and only use the car maybe 3/4 times a year so dont want to spend more than necessary, but I want a safe and reclining seat as when we do use it, it is usually for long journeys, can anyone recommend a good seat please ? I have been looking at some special offers on the maxi cosi tobi and priori, but cant see the difference between them. .

Hi, the Priori is the slightly older model and the Tobi is v similar with a few different features.

The main difference between them is the way they are fitted in your car. The seatbelt routing is completely different on each model.

The best way to choose between them is to fit both in your car and see which one is the better fit. Not all car seats fit every car so you need to find the best one for you.

Both are very good seats and come out very well in independent tests.

I have the tobi and love it, the website www.maxi-cosi.com has a fitting guide which can give you an idea of fit in some cars.

I had the tobi and hated it, it was so stiff to tighten the harness I had to step into the car. The shoulder staps are hard on their shoulders. The plastic bit on the harness between her legs broke with one pull after 6 months. Head lolled forward in the fully reclined position, she didn't seem to sleep for long in it. Horrible, horrible seat, oh and it faded really badly in 6 months.

Parents had the Priori, cheaper, better more comfortable straps, easier to tighten. DD sleeps in it and head doesn't loll forward, even though it has less recline positions than the Tobi it seems to go further back.

Don't get one from Halfords, they refused to refund my money after 6 months, despite it being broken and wanted me to have the display model which had obviously been knocked about.

we have the concord trimax. it was recommended to us by an independant baby shop. they said it was the highest scoring non-isofix car seat in the which car seat guide. ds is very comfortable in it. we've had it since june and so far no fading or broken bits and he can sleep comfortably in it. the other one they recommended was the recaro young sport but it didn't fit in our car.

Thankyou all for your comments, I will have a look at the concord trimax and the priori.

We have a tobi for one car and priori for the other. The main difference is that the tobi sits higher - its on a type of pedestal - so its great for our c-max which has very high windows. Didn't need it for the mini though LOL

I love them and they score highly in safety checks.

Shop around as they vary greatly in price. I wouldn't get in from Two left Feet though - they often come out the cheapest but messed me around no end and took 40 days to refund when I eventually cancelled the order. They've been investigated by watchdog and all sorts
