Ikea Pax wardrobes

Has anyone put a 236cm tall wardrobe in a room with a 237cm ceiling?

not that close, but not with a big clearance

I think you will find it pretty hard TBH. You'll have to assemble them upright IYSWIM - you won't be able to do it on the floor and then put them upright because they won't fit with only 1cm clearance

I don't think you have to hammer/screw anything into the top or bottom, just the sides, but I'd check that (can't check mine as don't have them any more)

I am GOOD at assembling flatpack furniture but found the really tall Pax wardobes a bit of a nightmare TBH - the wood isn't quite strong enough to cope with the length. You will need several people to help you out ideally as you'll want to do them upright and v.close to where you want them

NewYearBiggy · 06/01/2008 00:25

We had more clearance. DP braced the sides with odd strips of wood, the board, as Mrs Cusack says, does want to disintegrate round the screws, particularly if you try and move the thing.

Bloody near impossible. The way Ikea stuff goes together.

If it goes together like this with the screws coming from above and below you are fecked

If it has the long bolts shown in the middle then you are still fecked as they have to be screwed into the base and top then you won't be able to get the sides on.

Scramble · 06/01/2008 01:03

Ikea long bolt thingys

Scramble · 06/01/2008 01:08

You could use thes instead to secure sides

Or this

If uou see what I mean

Batons accross the back before tacking back panel on will help to strenghten it too.

MrsJohnCusack · 06/01/2008 04:47

have been thinking, don't think you'll be able to do it, think the screws are the ones that need access from above as well

malovitt · 06/01/2008 05:51

I bought a 236cm Pax wardrobe cheaply from ebay from someone who had tried, and failed miserably, to get her wardrobes assembled with a similar clearance.

It can't be done with 1cm to spare.

MrsJohnCusack · 06/01/2008 07:42

also the bloody thing is a nightmare to put up anyway without adding to your problems with such a tiny clearance

have we put you off yet?

foofi · 06/01/2008 07:46

We assembled this in a tiny room, but did have more clearance above. It was pretty difficult.

Heifer · 06/01/2008 07:55

We ended up having to take ours back and get the shorter version...

Good luck

you won't be able to do it!

hurricane · 06/01/2008 10:54

I think we did something like this. Made it up in a room with a higher ceiling then shuffled it into the room.

PrettyCandles · 06/01/2008 12:30

OK, I get the message [rueful].

Ikea's website claims that you only need 1cm minimum clearance above the 236cm wardrobe (which is exactly what we have), but, having constructed their 201cm Pax, we did have our doubts.

So what's the alternative to Ikea?

OP posts:
Scramble · 06/01/2008 12:42

I don't think you need an alternative shop just an alternative construction method.

I do agree with SUe - that's how you're supposed to do it and so theoretically it's possible

but in practice the wood is just a bit too crappy to do that easily

FriedGreenTomatoes · 06/01/2008 18:30

We've done it - with 6 of the bloody things! It requires at least two people (we had two, but a third would have been useful), a ladder, lots of patience, a sense of humour, and a good dose of swearing

We only bought 3 initially and the experience wasn't so bad, as we bought another 3 a couple of years later.
