LEAPPAD yes or no??

We are getting the new Leappad thing for DD (3 3/4) at Christmas. The new one has a proper pencil attached so she can write too. What does everyone think about Leappads?

BTW she loves 'writing' learning letters and is always playing phonetic games with us.

Friend of ours had one and it looked really good. Quite clever things.

Fisher Price have copied these, but theirs doesn't have a pen. The child just jabs with finger. Don't think thats so good! I like Leap-pads and other people on here have said they're good. Gave one to my 3 year old for birthday in September and he's well away with it now.

I've had two leappads both of which have broken, connection gone funny and then switch off autmatically, don't actually think they do anything you couldn't do yourself with your child, having said that I suppose it does give them confidence to progress on their own. Personally though, I have two other friends who have also had and we all agreed when talking about them not so long ago, that the novelty wore off very quickly xx Then again the same can be said for most toys!!

my dd has the my first leap pad (not the baby one) but after playing with the new fisher price power touch and talking to some staff in three different shops we have decided to get dd the power touch not the leap pad....why not have a play with the two yourselves...they are both in ELC?

hana · 19/11/2004 13:14

I just don't get them. I like snuggling up to dd and reading to her!

Sozie · 19/11/2004 13:50

Crunchie, we have bought dd (4y 1 mo) this for xmas also. I think it looks great but suppose it's how dd reacts to it. DD loves looking at books and listening to story tapes so I hope this will just be a follow on to that and what they do at nursery iyswim .

honeybunny · 19/11/2004 14:38

Hana, easier said than done when you have 2 kiddies. ds1 at 4 wants to know about letters, what words say, and loves to play the games on the leap-pad. ds2 also loves the games but at 2.5yrs isnt as able as ds1 and gets frustrated if he gets things wrong! They've been great for moments in this, my latest pg, when I've wanted a few minutes peace and even the thought of reading out loud has made me want to hurl!!

posyhairdresser · 19/11/2004 15:02

Ours has broken too

hana · 19/11/2004 15:09

absolutely hunnybunny......we soon will have two and I'm sure I'll be looking in the sales for one!

sparkler1 · 19/11/2004 18:11

We have the leap pad without pen and dd really enjoys it. The books do work out quite expensive though. At the moment there are quite a few offers around for xmas , ie 3 for 2 in Woolies, so I am making the most of that to build up the collection.

whizzz · 19/11/2004 19:40

If anyone lives near a Costco - they are /were selling them for £21 & books for about £8 or £9

nm · 21/11/2004 14:29

We have one but dd hardly ever plays with it - with hindsight I would not bother buying one

gscrym · 21/11/2004 14:34

DS has the little touch one (for babies) and shows no interest in it whatsoever. DH on the other hand thinks it's great.

stripey · 22/11/2004 13:32

I would say no. We have the my first leappad (not the baby one) and ds1 has never been interested enough to use it for more than 60 secs even though we have 4 books (one we haven't even opened). Ds2 loves to mess about with it (hes 2 and too young to use it properly). On the other hand ds1 will beg to use the computer and happily play on the cbeebies website for an hour.

I really think they are a waste of money and I HATE the voice.

handlemecarefully · 22/11/2004 13:42

Dd seems to enjoy hers. Every child is different I guess!
