how about making your own?

I made something for DS's room myself quite easily and very cheaply, basically long ledges along his wall with a peice of doweling to keep the books from falling off. Looks great

£109 not too bad for a wooden bookcase, and I am a skinflint .

Wht about a wall rack like this?

TheBlonde · 02/01/2008 22:06

Making my own not an option alas
We have no facilities for DIY etc
I could ask my father but I fear he thinks we take the mick with getting him to do all the jobs round our place

Scramble - sorry but those racks are just too officey

we (well dh) did similar to OMDB, although we used a piece of ply about 10 cm high with 1x1/2 wood as a frame (bottom and sides), painted to match the walls. DS has since decorated them with hama beads - look great and work reall well.

ChasingSquirrels · 02/01/2008 22:08

you need very little facilities for something like this - easily done in the room they are to be put up in.

TheBlonde · 02/01/2008 22:15

Did you attach yours to the wall?

yes, the ones OMDB described would be so easy to make, you could even get the DIY shop to cut the wood to length, so it would just be a case of tacking some dowling onto it (or no more nails).

ChasingSquirrels · 02/01/2008 22:18

obviously no good if you don't want to put on the wall though.

I am after free standing really as we are hoping to move this year

I love that bookcase, Dh promised to make one as I couldn't justify the price tag... haven't seen it yet though

We just use a big crate on the floor, dd (20mths) can flick through and tidy away (ie throw all over the floor) picture books at her leisure. It works like the box-tray things they have at the library and was v cheap!

The ones I made where very simple and cost less than £10, so when I move if I leave them here it won't matter, I will just make new ones in new house.

What I did was buy some strips of 5cm x 1cm wood, cost about £2 per 2m or sometihng. I cut them to be the same length as DS's bed, also got some 2cm x 1cm strips, stuck them to the end of the other peices to make a lip (used no more nails). Then painted them to match other woodwork in room. Attached them to the wall with small brackets. Attached net curtain wire above these on wall to stop books leaning forward and toppling off (used small hooks in wall for this). Now we have two shelves running the mength of DS's bed, great for bedtime stories and it displays the front covers, just like those shelves in the link.

They look great and unique, take up no extra floor space that a shelf would need, are great for bedtime stories and it really was minimal effort!
