as long as they are on the floor and you are in the room I don't see the problem
if you use themto feed your baby on top of a table and leave them unattended then obviously that's dangerous

FlllightAttendant · 01/01/2008 10:33

Yes I think it was the raised surfaces thing, there was a thread a few weeks ago. Some kids can arch back and flip out though even on floor. Wise to be careful

bumbly · 01/01/2008 10:34

exactly!!

agree and still think they are good for occassional use

but still if you see the video - quite scary of baby falling onto floor

just so people know....

You would have to be a bit mad to put them on a table surely?

they are quite easy to escape from

But you wouldn't ban dining room chairs because people keep putting them on TOP of tables, surely?!

TrinityRhinosDhWonHerAnIPOD · 01/01/2008 10:36

I had one for dd2 and 3
they could both flip themselves out of it by the time their were 4 months.....little monsters
they did get a bump or to when they managed to do that before I realised they. I always had it on the floor and mainly on carpeted floor too but when Gecko flipped herself out of it at 15 weeks I gavbe it to my friend with a younger baby and told her that it wouldn't last long but can be handy.

thegrowlygus · 01/01/2008 10:38

DS2 couldn't flip out of it. His legs were too fat
When we lifted him out of it the whole thing would come with him attached to his large arse.

Quite different from DS1 who was tiny and prem.

thegrowlygus · 01/01/2008 10:39

Incidentally, DS1 never flipped out either. Perhaps he was just too dim witted to work that out.

So there we go.
DS1 dim
DS2 fat

Whada family...

dooley1 · 01/01/2008 10:39

I think people put them in them when they are too big and can attempt to escape from them as MP says
they are designed for babies who can't sit up yet but people use them past 6 months

onebatmotherofgoditschilly · 01/01/2008 10:42

one batbaby flipped out very young - under 5 months if i recall. I didn't like mine at all.

i know lots and lots of babies PERSONALLY who flipt themselvs out...

unfortunately for one of the babies he and the bumbo were on the table, while daddy was feeding baby, and daddy went to sink to make big sister a drink when baby flipt out, off table and head first straight onto concrete floor
(he cried but was completely fine, babies bounce etc)

Have know several babies to flip out and head butt the floor as well

would NEVER use one

kerala · 01/01/2008 11:13

useful for about 5 minutes before the baby learns how to flip out of it. Thereafter just takes up space in small flat. Dont bother!

I'm selling mine atm on ebay, because I've had it for two children neithe rof whom has really used it. Both fat legs, one had huge nappies on as well, and once they are in it it is quite hard to extract them.

Also everything they want to play with is then out of reach as soon as they drop it, unless you fork out for a play tray to fit as well.

MerlinsBeard · 01/01/2008 12:19

we used ours until DS2 flipped himself out, has been used as either a tv chair for DS1/ds2 or the place that they dump their sirty clothes at the end of the day!

LIZS · 01/01/2008 18:12

But aren't they being recalled in US et al because of the packaging (which is different in UK and carries a warning about not being for use on raised surfaces to meet BS standards) and not in UK. Ebay ones may of course not have been of UK retail origin or had original packaging , but then many 2nd hand things don't come with instructions anyway in which case commonsense should prevail.

Swedes2Turnips1 · 02/01/2008 21:41

Ooooh I love our Bumbo. DD spent many a happy hour wedged in Bumbo atop garden table while we sipped Sauvignon Blanc, wondering where it all went wrong. DS now loves it. Inclement weather prohibits tabletop garden use.

talktothebees · 02/01/2008 21:51

DD is currently very obviously trying to work out how to escape hers but it is very very useful sometimes. Ours spends most of its time on the bathroom floor - very handy to be able to plonk baby down when mummy has to go. DD is actually on more danger of throwing herself out of my arms than her bumbo.

KeriDixon · 15/02/2008 10:06

Lay down a plastic sheet to protect floor, place lo in Bumbo Baby Sitter on the floor and attach NEW style play tray, open pot of baby yogart pour over tray, if you are not both laughing for the next ten minurte its the wrong flavour yogart.

This kind of thing keeps my lo distracted from trying to escape as the fun is right in front of her.

I got my tray from www.babyproductsonline.co.uk/index.php?cmd=6&stock_code=398&CategoryID=51&Product_Name=Bumbo% 20Play%20Tray%20White

Have fun

BeauLocks · 15/02/2008 10:08

Ds1 toppled out of his on the hard kitchen floor and fell flat on his face. He had a massive black eye and huge bump on his head. I threw the effing bumbo in the bin.
