CD ROM if possible for teaching TOUCH TYPING to 9 year old.
KangaMummy · 17/11/2004 23:02
PLease does anyone know of a CDROM that can teach DS age 9 years to touch type.
He has Dypraxia and his teacher has told us that he would find IT lessons easier if he could type better.
He knows where some of the keys are but is very slow.
I learnt to touch type years ago in school but now have forgotten and look at keyboard not
the screen {hence the mistakes}
Would be grateful for any ideas
TIA

I learnt to touch type with Mavis Beacon and I'm fairly certain that my old school was the one who introduced it to me - so it should be suitable for a child.
However, if you want a more fun approach to typing (although it doesn't teach home keys - so you might want to go through the basics first) there's a great game on Popcap games called Typer Shark - the web game is free, but if you like it you can buy the deluxe version free to keep on your computer at home. Very addictive and does improve accuracy/speed!

Had great fun playing the game on the lowest level even then it was hard. Maybe a good one for codswallop?

online and free - we use it at school with year 5 and upwards

KM - my sister learned to touch-type with the Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing CDROM when she was 10, it's not as much fun as some of the other ones but it works. She tried some of the game type programmes first, but found them too distracting. They were also slower to teach, as she treated them like games and didn't want to move on.

Popsycal recommended senselang to me a few weeks ago, and dd1 LOVES it. And it's free.
Def. try it out before shelling out for a cd-rom.

KangaMummy, DS' school is about to introduce touch-typing lessons for 7 and up using a much-praised scheme that was originally devised for children with dyslexia but which is considered helpful for all children.
I will find out the name (not at the school gates ) so may take a few days...and get back to you. It's NOT Mavis Beacon, great product though that is.

Yes, my son is doing it at school at the moment, he's in year 5. Will find out what it's called and get back to you. I know there is a koala on the cover of the box but will get more info. He absolutely loves it.
