I'm looking to buy a sewing machine and haven't the faintest idea what to get, or how much I should pay.

I don't need anything too fancy... anyone any sugestions?

I have an ELNA, bought it from John Lewis. I found the staff really really helpful, I told them what I wanted the machine for and they showed me what they had. It's been great, haven't had any problems. They also sat me down so I could try them all out! I got a pretty basic model for about £150 several years ago. You can spend a fortune on some machines!

Thanks FF hope she catches this thread...

Hana, thanks for the info. What's your idea of basic? Does it overlock at all? Would it be easy for a novice like me to use?

I LOVE Bernina, but they are expensive

I just have a normal "brother" machine and it is fine for most things

I have a seperate overlocker, but it is very tempremental If you go to a sewing machine shop they are usually pretty helpful and will match a machine to your needs. it depends how much you use it and what you use it for. As I say money no object, i would buy a bernina!

How timely! My sewing machine died last week after 20 years of loyal service, and I need a new one too. I want something that can do embroidery.

How much do they cost nowadays?

bunnyrabbit · 18/11/2004 11:00

Eeek Fio, don't have loads of money.... will go into the local shop and claim ignorance and see what they suggest. I will then report back!!

What was this course fio? sounds interesting.

fio2 · 18/11/2004 12:11

it was log cabin wall hangings! It was patchwork and quilting, it s a 2 day thing, and I have homework to do before the next class!

anorak · 18/11/2004 12:17

I'd like to go on a course to learn to do machine embroidery. Anyone know of a course like that?

fio2 · 18/11/2004 12:20

well i have to do machine embroidery on this one! But this is through the adult education, through the college. the do some great courses. You shoulkd have seen the stuff the made at the 'felt making' course. think i will do that next time it is offered. Plus they are cheap. 15 pound for 2 days and they put on lunch etc. but you had to buy your own fabric. But very enjoyable!

Wow! that sounds great. I'll have to get some info from my local area.
