Should I get a Nintendo DS Lite for my 6yo DD?

She is just coming to the end of her Leapster which has done her well for the last 3 or so years but she's finding it all a bit boring now. Her Leapster games go up to 8yo and as the Nintendo DS is marketed from 8+ I thought this might be a good follow on. But I'm not sure if the games are a bit too grown up for her?? She doesn't like Bratz & High School Musical for example - says they're for older girls. I know she prefers the more educational games which is why the Leapster has been so good up to now.

I am getting DD2 one, she will be 6. DD1 got one for her 8th bday and plays with it most days. There are loads of gamea that 6 yr olds like, I have bought dd2 the great brain academy (basically a kids version of Brain training which we already have) The Bratz game is rubbish - DD1 wants to take hers back and swap!! I have also got dd1 a Pippa Funnel gamw (horse riding) which she will love. Loads of the games are really nice in that they are non-competitive animal tye things which lttle girls love. My girls had a leappad but It never enthalled them. The DS is going to be so popular.

DS has got one for xmas, he is 5.
He has asked for nothing but this for months, so glad I got one a few weeks ago while they were still quite easy to get hold of.

I have been half heartedly looking for a wii for myself, but they seem impossible to get at the moment. I don't mind waiting until after Xmas though, hopefully they will be reduced.

I have one and my 6yo dd is hooked on Animal Crossing. She struggled a bit at first as you have to read quite a bit, but I think its improved her reading!

chicaguapa · 12/12/2007 14:31

Thanks! GOod to know.
Jura - what's the game where your DS keeps deleting the dogs and buying new ones?

We couldn't decide whether to get our DD one either (6yr) but what swung it for us is that I had to go on a business trip so managed to get a fab deal Duty Free. We are hoping it helps with her overall 'speed' at completing things - only thing the school has mentioned she has to work on.

DD (5y8m) is getting a DS for Christmas, as are a lot of her friends (all Y1). She already enjoys playing Animal Crossing and Mario (the mini games bit of it) on mine. I have ordered her (either from us or others) the following games: High School Musical, new Disney Princess one, Disney Friends, and Charlotte's Web.

LIZS · 12/12/2007 14:58

dd is getting one for Christmas. she's 6 . Have ordered Disney Princess and Dolphin Island games.

xxoddball · 12/12/2007 19:13

where r u guys getting them from ? all sold out round here (cambs)

Coolchristmasfairy · 12/12/2007 19:23

Rather than asking "should I?", I think the more relevant question is "Where can I..."!

  • they seem to be somewhat elusive, unless you throw heaps of money at the problem
kid · 12/12/2007 20:25

I was going to get either a wii for my kids or a DS each, I knew I had to make a decision quickly as the shops were selling out, so I got mine at the beginning of November before they had vanished from the shops.
Good luck in getting one, mine is from Argos.

goingfor3christmaspuddings · 12/12/2007 20:35

I got one for dd two weeks ago to give her for christmas. Very hard to buy now.
The games she likes are Cooking Mama and Nintendogs. I bought MarioKart with hers and hope she will like that too. Film spin off games are generally rubbish.

chicaguapa · 12/12/2007 20:48

DD has a healthy building society account as we ask our massive family to put money in there rather than give her loads of presents. So she can get one after Christmas when they all come back in stock... if they do.

DS loved his at 6.

I got one for my nephew last week - basically haunted the 'Game' and Argos websites, because they come back into stock at strange times, like the middle of the night. Apparently Toys r Us had loads last week. HTH.

pukkapatch · 12/12/2007 22:27

we got it for ds for his sixth birthdya. he loves it, and tbh, am thinking that four, almost five year old dd would liek one too

23balloons · 12/12/2007 22:43

I am probably the only one who will say no, judging by the other posts but I don't like them so ds who is 7 won't be getting one even though he is the only one in his class who doesn't own a ds.

I don't know how many educational games are available but it is worth checking out if that is what you are looking for.

I think they are too expensive and at £20-30 a game a waste of money - there will probably be a new fad by next year??

kid · 12/12/2007 22:50

The GBA games work on the DS too, you have to use the buttons to work it rather than the pen but they are much cheaper.
I've seen some good games for £15 too. If you shop around (or Ebay) then you can get some good deals.

I also saw that Comet have games on sale for 99p, but its only available instore.
