Miele are the best, no contest. But they are pricey.

Cheaper but good alternatives are Bosch or Siemens.

If you can possibly afford one, and not everyone can unfortunately, a miele. I'd 2 bosch's (which are meant to be next best, and significantly less dear) over the years and neither lasted long. It's possible I was just unlucky, but we had the engineer round so often to repair it, he might as well have moved in with us. I do so much washingand you probably do too, with kids etcthat you might as well invest in a good one. It pained me to spend that much, but I haven't regretted it.

We've just bought a Hoover Super Silent 9kg machine. It was £337 delivered from Currys (bought online for extra discount). You get five year parts guarantee as standard. We've had it a couple of weks and are very pleased with it. Its the VHD9143ZD model.

thank you all very much.
Anyone else got any thoughts?

Whetever you buy, make sure it's got a filter - at the front. Ours regularly stops spinning properly, and it's a real pain as we have to take the tumble dryer off the top of the washing machine, then pull the washing machine out to get at the filter, where there will be a hair-clasp, a screw or a baby wipe lying in wait to sabotage my entire washing pile.
Can you tell we had to do this just yesterday?

We've had a Zanussi. Has lasted nearly 7 years and only had to call out the repair man this year (because a bra wire had got stuck in the machine and made a hole in the drum !!)

My mum has a Hoover washer/dryer - don't know which model - it's been nothing but trouble! The repair man has had to be called out at least twice a year since they've had it and it's newer than mine.

Another vote for Zanussi. My previous ones were Bosch and AEG and both died shortly after the guarantee expired.

Very easy to clean the front filter. The only downside is that the buttons are exceedingly attractive to troublesome toddler hands. DS is forever pausing or resetting things.

I love my Hotpoint washer/drier (WD860). I bought it online for about £100 less than Currys. One of the best features is the child lock which means they can't fiddle with the program, if they press the buttons they get beeped at (which they love). Also it's very quiet, sometimes I have to check I've actually switched it on.

It has quite a large capacity too and a nice big door.
