We have a Twintec one, It was quite expensive although you can get cheaper ones. Once it's installed all you have to do is add new salt when it gets low. Cost to run will depend on how much water you use. Not sure how much it costs us but I'm not really bothered anymore as it has made such a difference.

We moved into a new build and our water is so hard, when we first moved in all our shiny new things started looking scabby and ruined and I was scrubbing off limescale within a few days. Now it's virtually none existant. I am saving a small fortune due to not having to use so much detergent/soap/cleaning products and saving so much time because stuff is so much quicker/easier to clean.

And it feels so lovely when you have a shower. It's a bit strange at first because it still feels like you are covered in soap when you've rinsed off, but you aren't.

We also had a seperate tap and filter installed for drinking water which still takes the water from the mains. The people who fitted ours told us it's ok to drink softened water but warned us it tastes a bit yuk and they were right.
