e3 owners - 2nd seat

My youngest is now 16wks and bored when awake lying in the newborn flat bit - when did you start using the 2nd seat? Did anyone obey the instructions and wait till 6 months? Also can you fold the buggy with the 2nd seat in place or do you have to remove it first? Bad enough I have to take the wheels off to get it in the car but hey...

Think I'm going to miss the surprise when people spot the baby hiding beneath the toddler once he goes on proper show in the 2nd seat.

Thanks

I can't quite remember but I think it was between 3 and 4 months. I believe you do need to take the seat off to fold it but I don't really put mine in the car anyway.
Don't worry, you still get plenty of comments when its set up with two seats!

13/14 weeks - no problems. You do have to removve the second seat to fold it, sorry. Well at least I've always done.

Gem13 · 10/11/2004 16:00

You don't have to take the seat off to fold it. Well we didn't but we have an estate (Peugeot).

no biggie - hope you got a good price - for the money these things cost, it has to suit

OK so you dont HAVE to take the seat off to fold it, but it is a hulking great thing if you don't, but I guess just about compact enough to squeeze in the boot.

Gem13 · 10/11/2004 16:33

The hulking it into the car was one of the problems! We live in the country so it was a hassle. (And don't get me started on the panniers ) MB is wide but not so heavy and tough on one's back.

We got the same money back on it so that was good and I loved it when DD was little and in the carrycot. Plus the anticipation of it coming from Rodney!

redshoes · 10/11/2004 17:52

Gem13 what what else didn't you like about it? I have bought a double urban mb for dd(aged nearly 2) and db due dec, but I am fascinated by the E3! Would love to know what you thought...

Pam70 · 10/11/2004 19:59

Sorry to hijack this thread - this is probably a really stupid question but can anyone tell me how you attach the double storm / rain cover to the E3? Was caught out in the rain the other day and couldn't work out how it was supposed to fasten? Ended up holding it onto buggy handlebar and pushing - not fun with heavy 3 year old and newborn!

Thanks!

Right, here goes. Background - I bought the MB first when pregnant then decided the E3 sounded like the ideal buggy so bought that just before DD arrived. There's 18 months between my two and I had a c-section with the second.

Main problem was that the second seat didn't recline for the baby and she didn't seem comfortable in at 4/5 months - squirmed, screamed, etc. Was a fight to slot her in and when I banged her head once trying to get her in that was the final straw.

Also didn't like the way main seat dipped at bum so that DS's knees were higher than his bottom - bad posture.

Didn't feel comfortable to push up and down our hilly streets and over uneven pavements. Felt like the centre of gravity was out and I had aching shoulders. Hard work to lug it in and out of car especially after lugging child and baby in and out of car.

Didn't like the fact that people couldn't see DD. Not only did I want to show her off but I wanted her near me and once when DS was in supermarket trolley with DH and I was pushing DD in 'empty' buggy, a couple of people crashed their trolleys into her.

Good points - the removable carrycot was great, especially for things like music groups where DD could stay asleep and be put out of reach. Good too for a winter baby. But it was small. It meant she was out of reach of occasional outbursts of jealousy from DS too!

MB - We bought a carrycot for the MB so at weekends (when DH could put the buggy in the boot) we used that. It was a bigger carrycot so DD was flatter for longer. After I recovered from c-section we found ourselves using the MB more than the E3. Both children look more comfortable in MB. Easier to collapse too. Need a particular car for it though. Fits in Peugeot 306 estate with ease but not so easily in Audi A6 estate.

Have a single Nipper and alternate between using the two most days. Plan to get a buggy board for the Nipper for our holiday.

Phew, hope that helps!

Gem13, thanks! It's so useful to hear that stuff - my big reservation was re the vulnerability of an 'invisible' baby. Think I'll stick with the mb. Is yours an urban? If so, do you want to sell your carrycot?!

Gem13 · 11/11/2004 12:55

redshoes - glad it was of help. On good days (and I'm pleased to say that's most of the time!) I plan to have at least one more so we will hang onto the carrycot. Keep an eye on eBay though as they do come up every so often.

florenceuk · 12/11/2004 09:59

Gem do you think you would fit a double MB into a Renault Scenic? I have my doubts but DH thinks it might...

Gem13 · 12/11/2004 15:08

No idea - sorry.

I think the MB Urban is smaller than the MB Terrain though as it doesn't have the fixed wheels so it would be worth checking that out.
