Anyone else had to get rid of their highchair cos they thought it was too dangerous?

I'm reluctant to get rid of my Stokke Tripp Trapp but I can't think how to make it safe. DS(8mo) is pushing back from the table in it and the front of the base is coming off the ground as he swings in it. DS is delighted with this discovery - I am terrified. Is there anything I can do about this? Or do I have to get a highchair with integral table?

Also, what age do you think I can put him back in a chair at the table? I really liked us all eating at the table together. Damn.

All advice gratefully received! Thanks.

have you tried a handysitt here

i had to abandon a highchair after DD2 got stuck in it and i had to call the firebrigade

NotQuiteCockney · 05/12/2007 10:34

You can put a tray on the tripp trapp, I used one.

TBH, I'd be inclined to let him push back, and let the chair go off centre and fall a tiny bit, if he's strong enough to do that (with you or your DH right behind him!). The sensation of falling a tiny bit will put him off the idea.

Mine have managed to topple over their chairs a few times (same type), but they're big now.

I looked at high chairs for ages- really wanted a Tripp Trapp cos they looked so cool; almost all others were so damn ugly. But couldn't justify the price of it and actually ended up getting an IKEA one. I was stunned at the price (about £14!) and it has a tray you can leave on or take it off and you can then pull it up to the table and they can eat with you. It's a lovely simple clean design. It's white moulded plastic with chrome looking legs. Can't remember the name but it's probably the only one in Ikea that is white. Totally unoffensive design, no huge padded puffy flowery bits, easy to wipe clean, comfy and light weight and doesn;t take up loads of room and so damn cheap! Ebay your Tripp Trapp and reap the profits!

We have a Chicco one which neither of my children would ever be able to push over. Actually, DS2 still has his main meal sitting in it (won't sit still on a normal dining room chair and I really don't want gravy/pasta sauce/ice cream etc all over the chairs). It has variable heights and can fit under the dining room table and is strong enough to cope with a 4yo!

OrmIrian · 05/12/2007 10:51

We got rid of our first one because it was too big and everyone kept tripping over the legs which splayed half way across the kitchen. DS#1 fell over it and cut his lip open once. Horrible thing! We used one of those little booster seat things with straps that you fit onto normal chairs. Last one was an Ikea wooden job and much much better but that went when DS#2 was about 2.5 because it got in the way.

Thanks for the replies - that's all really helpful. (OMG at the fire brigade story!)

Psycobabble - can I ask what height is your seat now? We're at two notches down, which is sort of as low as I thought we could go while DS's this height, but maybe not.

I think I'll probably get one of those IKEA ones and look into the Tripp Trapp table attachment as my MIL wants another highchair and could have this one at her house. (Or, I maybe I will Ebay it, jetson, I think they have a good resale value... But then I'm rubbish at Ebaying!)

Oh, and the handysitt has been recommended to me before, my SIL has one and says they're great. I know that it says 7mo on but I think DS might be a bit swamped in it right now. One for the future though. (When I've managed to flog the Tripp Trapp )

let me know when you're ready for a handysitt, we have two but DD1 doesn't really need it any more - would be happy to sell it on.

SpeccieSeccie · 05/12/2007 13:15

Thanks for that. I'll let you know

We have one for both children made by east coast. Like the tripp trapp ours is good up until adulthood, but the base of it is different and more sturdy. DS has always been one to push on his highchair but there is no way he could tip this one over.
Just a thought

BroccoliSpears · 05/12/2007 13:29

At one point, our Triptrap was also not ideal for dd. We spent £12.00 on an Ikea one and it has been blardy brilliant. Easy to clean. Integrated tray. Can't tip it over. She's now 18 months and starting to sit up at the table with us in her Triptrap again, though without any of the baby settings or harness. Still use the Ikea one for some meals, if they're very messy, or if we're not all eating together. Having both was the perfect solution for us.

We also have East Coast one and feel it is very safe

tissy · 05/12/2007 20:44

dd did this!

We put a small screw-in eye just under the table- top, and tied the high-chair on, so it couldn't be kicked over- sorted!

This phase will only last a few months, so you don't need to get rid of what is otherwise a fantastic chair.

callmeovercautious · 05/12/2007 20:44

I second getting rid of the Tripp Trapp a good friend of mines DD had a nasty fall after pushing back like you describe. She threatened me with Phisical violence if I even thought about getting one! I now have the biggest sturdiest Chicco money can buy (thanks to my Grandma) and can't recommend them enough.

jellycat · 05/12/2007 20:46

I would hold on to the Tripp Trapp as you can use it when he's older. We Had a high chair on wheels when the dses were small - if they pushed back it just rolled. It had a removable tray so they could sit up to the table or use the tray. We got Tripp Trapps when ds2 was 18 months and have never had any problems with them tipping back so I'm a bit surprised yours does. When the dses push on the table the chairs just slide backwards. When he was on an ordinary chair ds1 pushed himself over a couple of times. I guess your flooring is less slidy than ours! (we have vinyl).

BTW I pushed myself backwards from a table when I was a child (on an ordinary dining chair). I went backwards through a patio window and landed on the paved area outside. I was amazingly totally unhurt!

amidaiwish · 05/12/2007 21:44

the East Coast one has been discontinued btw. It used to be called the "Sit Up".

amazonianwoman · 05/12/2007 22:16

DD 3.5 and DS 8.5mths both have Tripp Trapps and neither have had any safety issues. They both push back against the kitchen table, but they just slide backwards - we have a tiled kitchen floor & wooden floorboards in dining room. I love the Tripp Trapp. Used a friend's Mamas & Papas expensive one yesterday and was horrified at the nooks & crannies stuffed with festering bits of food (and she's uberclean)

SpeccieSeccie · 06/12/2007 09:37

DS used to slide backwards in the Tripp Trapp but we've now moved into a new phase of pushing (and kicking out with his legs) that's resulted in sometimes a glide backwards, sometimes a super-scary wobble.
