dd loves our laptops and digital cameras - any recommendations for children's versions? trouble is, she's only nearly two and all of them (which look shite anyway) say they're for 3+...

should i just wait? she pretends everything's a laptop at the moment, it would be AMAZING if she had her own.

The thing is that this isn's an "AIBU for wanting a laptop for dd" thread, Aitch just wants advice about the products.

MamaMaiasaura · 25/11/2007 14:34

ooo does that mean i am not 'allowed' to say that perhaps she would be better spending her money on something else?

Kewcumber · 25/11/2007 14:36

cantsleep is right, 3+ jusy means that it hasn;t been tesyed for the under 3's which costs more. Doesn't mean it is suitable but equally it might well be suitable.

Have you thought of getting a really old slow laptop from Freecycle or a local business. We in work have such a problem of disposing of old computers - would be happy for someone to take one of ours away (caveat - not sure if we have any laptops at the moment)

CantSleepWontSleep · 25/11/2007 14:44

I don't see what's wrong with a toddler using a laptop. Kids like to emulate what their parents do. No-one would have a problem if Aitch came on saying 'dd likes to play with my hoover, so which toy one should I get her?', so why have a problem with something else which is part of everyday life for a lot of people?

ELF1981 · 25/11/2007 14:48

Jesus - DD would have no toys if it weren't for doing what me and DH do - her cooker would go, her shopping trolley, drawing table, toy cars, her cleaning cart... okay, scrap that, she might be able to keep her cleaning cart, I still dont know how she knows how to sweep/hoover/dust when I never do

In fairness, I'd rather buy dd a toy laptop than having to see her bash away at mine at the odd times I use it when she is awake.

lucyellensmum · 25/11/2007 14:52

Does anyone have a fisher price or vtech digi cam?? Are they any good? I saw them and thought, phwoooaaaar, so want one for DD but she is only 2.4 so may not be able to do it or even interested. BUT the lady at play group was taking some snaps on friday, then DD happened across a toy camera and was going around taking all their pictures. So, just had a look in the argos (sorry cod, i know this is the emporium of the chav word that must not be uttered) and they are £60!!!! Really quite at the top end of what i would want to spend on her entire present list to be honest, but if they are good and user friendly i think DD will enjoy it, she has pretty much mastered the camera on my mobile!

ELF1981 · 25/11/2007 14:54

What about a very cheap camera, non digital. They are very cheap nowadays and still quite robust, as long as you dont lob them across a room

lucyellensmum · 25/11/2007 14:56

As far as the lap top thing goes, i would be a bit dubious, only because i think a bit later on the OPs dd would get a lot out of it, but if she buys it now, by the time she could really enjoy it, it will have become an old toy and not used, IYSWIM. Perhaps a pretend one that isnt too expensive would be good, but why do they all have to be fecking pretty pink or covered in characters, i think that would rather put DD off.

lucyellensmum · 25/11/2007 14:58

Elf, that is an idea but TBH, i think all the bits and pieices might be a bit of a safety worry for us. We have a few old cams lying around but the thing with digital is that you can see the picture you have just taken and that appeals to DD in a big way. She loves looking at the pictures on my phone.

Aitch · 25/11/2007 15:27

oh i don't want anything expensive. the one i'm thinking of getting is 15 notes. she does play with our ones but dh lost some v important work the other day so that may have to come to an end...

funnily enough, though, i wouldn't get her a toy hoover, not when she can 'play' so usefully with ours.

I noticed Woolworths had a little tikes digital camera reduced to £29.99

Aitch · 25/11/2007 17:35

cheers, whoops.
elf, i just noticed further down that you'd said about an alphabet one for a fiver in tescos. that's really the kind of thing i'm looking for. either really good or really shite, iykwim, because the ones priced at 20 something quid seem a bit rubbish with their black and white screens, so she'll be back playing with ours in no time. otoh, something that popped up an animal when she pressed the keyboard she would LOVE.

we got the Vtech small laptop for DS when he was 12 months and it has been great. We got it form Hamleys but I cant see it on their website to link to it for you. It is red, kinda lozenge shape whith bug colourful buttons inside.

aaaargh · 25/11/2007 20:51

sorry about that link! just copied and pasted without looking

here it is again

Aitch · 25/11/2007 21:39

bah. if there was something like that but for an age range a bit higher than 6mos plus, we'd be talking. i just don't like the business of the b/w screens on the ones for older kids. bugger, i'm really going to have to Go Shopping, amn't i? thanks ever so much to everyone who has replied. apart from cod, natch.
