How hot does you baby get?

Could you use it indoors or would it again be too hot?

Do you use it with the minkee side facing our - how is this?

Thanks I'm on the verge of buying one

do you have a link to it please? I would like to see it. I'm always interested in slings.

peachygirl · 25/11/2007 09:56

i understand that minkee is basically long fleece. so it would get a bit warm inside the house. i think i have seen your post on ukbwsw, so hopefully you will get more informative responses there, and mine may be pants. have you considered getting a MT with wool on the inside? a few norweigian wahm make them with wool one side which i think is a great idea. scandi mt's are expensive though. you could do an ISO for a second hand one on tbw or UKbwswsap.

peachygirl · 25/11/2007 19:56

Thanks Kiskidee I haven't posted about this anywhere else although I do post on the sling meet site.
I really would like to get it as soon as posisble I was ging to get joey sling but I know that the lady that makes them won't be able to do it in time

OP posts:
kiskidee · 25/11/2007 20:26

you use it with the minkee facing in. one of the respondents on the yahoo groups says it is 'snuggly and lovely' i guess if you like your house on the cool side, it may be ok to use indoors.

are you using another MT at the moment?

peachygirl · 25/11/2007 20:34

No I tried one at a sling meet and talked to another local baby wearer who was selling a patapum I went to try out and she really rated them.In fact she diddled herself out of a sale buy telling me that they were so good
I use a Coorie pouch quite alot but really want to start wearing DD (9 months)at home so I can get a few more jobs done on my days off and also at work. The childminder drops DD off at the school gate and if I can wear her on my back I can get several bits and bobs done before I get home , putting up displays, laminating etc. She won't be able to escape from my room !!

I've ordered one from big mama slings who seem to have an excelent reputation on TBW. We are going to see the terracotta warriors on Sunday so maybe it will have arrived by then. My parents and DH are putting money in to it as my birthday present.

enjoy. MTs rock. i am sure it will get there early enough to try it out a few times before Sunday.

NoviceKnitter · 26/11/2007 19:04

Mine just arrived. So far so great. The minkee is soft and not too hot for indoors at this time of year. I think it will be too hot come summer but that's a long way off. Unlike wraps there's a bit of room for air in to get in the sides so that sort of cancels the minkee out iyswim. I have a coorie, a ring and a wrap and would say my new babyhawk is by far the easiest for doing jobs indoors with DD - mainly because it leaves your arms so free. Did loads of folding while she had a sling nap yesterday. I think the babyhawk would be a be hard and uncomfy without hte minkee.

PS I got the grey dragonflies with charcoal straps. Bit annoyed cos I had to pay £12 customs charge when it arrived, btu otherwise it's marvellous!

peachygirl · 26/11/2007 19:27

ooh that's interesting NoviceKnitter. I ordered one without the minkee in the end.
But I think I could probably fashion some kind of liner out of fleece if necessary.
I have got visons of some kind of poncho/cape garment to put over it if I were out in the cold.

kiskidee · 26/11/2007 19:47

without minkee doesn't make it hard and uncomfy. how old are your babies? dd likes to be carried very high on my back so she can see over my shoulders. i think this video is fab. i only have a toddler so I can't try it out though.

NoviceKnitter · 26/11/2007 20:51

maybe should have gone for none minkee then... i did um and ah.... just watched vid - looks great! haven't tried dd on back yet but will - she's 5 months.

peachygirl · 26/11/2007 21:38

My DD is 9 months but she's not huge. So that kind of carry would be great as she s a real nosy parker.
Thats a great link, thank you

My sling arrived today! So far so good. I can get DD into it and just have to master the methods of tying. I'm really pleased with it

OP posts:
NoviceKnitter · 28/11/2007 18:22

Peachygirl, how's it going with your sling?

peachygirl · 28/11/2007 20:56

Good thanks, although I haven't had much time with it today as I have a late night at work on wednesday.
But I do find that one side of the body piece seems to fit on DD more snugly than the other. It seems to be central on my back could it be moving as I am putting DD in it? I am usiug the side shuffle way of putting her in it.
I will try to learn the santa sack throw!

i'm a bit scared of trying the back hold - think will give it a go at the weekend with DP on hand. I'm still really pleased with mine in terms of ability to do things round the house. Made a bolognese sauce this morning while she was asleep in the baby hawk. I like it better than a wrap because her head isn't so pushed into me. Also, when out and about, unlike wrap slings it stays in position. A good buy for sure.

kiskidee · 29/11/2007 19:44

i ahve a custom made BH which i think is v pretty. It is blue mini-claveras on one side and Loteria on the other. I chose those because of my Mexican/Mayan heritage. I will have to try it out again as I found that the straps don't want to stay put in a ruck but also at the time dd was going through a phase of refusing to be carried.

I also have a scandanavian made MT which is the bees knees and totally in love with.

peachygirl · 29/11/2007 21:32

you can cross the staps over in front of you when you tie it Kiskidee.
After looking at your link I watched several other video clips on you tube showing me how to put it on.

OP posts:
kiskidee · 30/11/2007 06:05

i do that to keep it on but didn't find it as comfy. the straps end up close to my neck so the weight was on my shoulders. i really need to give it another go as i am thinking it is sitting in the cupboard doing nothing.

peachygirl · 30/11/2007 21:19

On thr baby hwak website w in the instruction bit it has this version too.
I may try this as my straps slipped too when I wore it the other day

Tibetan

Tie shorter straps around your waist with the side you want facing out against your body
Put your baby on your hip and scoot them around while leaning forward with your back flat like a table
Make sure their body is centered on your back
While holding on to the baby with one hand, pull the body of the carrier up between their legs and over their back
Pull the straps straight up and do a little hop while you pull on the straps to ensure that the baby/toddler is nestled into the carrier
Pull the straps over your shoulders and then back under your arms (like a backpack) and then back under to pull them around to your back
Cross the straps over your babies legs and then under the opposite leg and bring back to the front
Take the strap in your left hand and thread it through the ?backpack? strap on your right shoulder
Take the strap in your right hand and thread it through the ?backpack? strap on your left shoulder
Tie the two ends with a square knot

Just thought I'd say how much I'm loving my babyhawk. I really like the way dd's not tight against me, so i can look down and see her face, check her nostrills! (ok so a bit paranoid) and she can look up at me and we can have a chat, and yet she's so well supported. she has lovely naps in it and i can get on with stuff. Also, I walk miles in it very comfortably. I'm looking forward to trying it on my back but imagine that comes later. When do you think it's good to go for the back carry? Only downside is what to do with the straps when you take it off somewhere out and about - all gets a bit chaotic. Also, do you reckon ok to wash whole thing in machine with minkee etc (sorry i'm sure it says so on website just being lazy.)

ps Peachygirl were the other video clips you looked at on You Tube?

peachygirl · 03/12/2007 20:14

here's a list
I just typed it in and browsed.
We took the babyhawk to the terracotta warrior exhibition and it was a great success. We did have the buggy too but folded it up in the corner and transfered DD. She went to sleep!!!

OP posts:
peachygirl · 03/12/2007 20:20

I'd just shove it all in the washing machine. I wondered about doing mine to soften it up a bit.
I think the back carry would be from about 6 months but it would depend on your DD's head control I suppose.
I did manage to fold it all up nicely in the morning and put it in a little bag. I think you would have to do a bit of wrapping with the straps if you were out and about.. They are very long aren't they
