Can anyone recommend a baby jogger for a running parent?

My first baby is due in March. I am not running now but want to go back to it ASAP! What should I look for when buying a baby jogger? Do I also need to get a normal kind of pushchair as well or will the baby jogger meet all needs? Has anyone had a good experience running with one and can recommend one? Can you do off road walking/jogging with a baby jogger or are they only designed for tarmac?

Thanks!

Leo

Think you might find that the recommendation is that a baby under 3 months shouldn't be jogged over rough ground, but there are several otherwise suitable jogging pushchairs around for use from birth. Have a look at this thread fopr a few ideas. Friend has a TFK one but not sure if that is available in UK (German brand).

Hi Liz,

Thanks for the reply. I will look at the other thread. I live in Switzerland so the german one may be easier for me to get hold of.

Ah, so do I ! Whereabouts ?

hiya Leogaela

I have a Baby Jogger, bought from the States but available in most of Europe I believe. I would only ever use it for running as it is too large for trips to the shops and it has only one position for the baby to sit in and not much of an under basket. Having said that, it is brilliant at what it is sold for, ie running with a baby over 6 months of age. I think I would have been tearing my hair out without it as I reckon I probably used it at least every other day, for about 30-60 minutes. Sometimes DS slept in it and othertimes he stayed awake - I'm confident he found it comfortable as he never complained when going in it and as he got older, he would climb in it by himself and say "faster faster"!
The website is www.babyjogger.com.

Thanks mckenzie, are my suspicions correct that the baby joggers that you can really run with are different to other 3 wheelers that are called 'joggers'? Which model do you have? Anything different you would look for if you were buying it again?

Me too ! You probably live just down the road !! Have you come across a Yahoo group, Expat-Moms-In-Switzerland - great source of information and social group too. Moderator lives in Thalwil.

Which? Zurich or Adliswil? I am just down the road from the Felseneggbahn.
Yes, I had a look at their website again this week. There is some useful stuff, once the baby is born I will probably make contact with some of the groups, will be nice to do some things with baby and English speaking groups. But at the moment trying to keep pace with my childless friends!!!!!
Are you from UK originally? Children?

I live along from Felseneggbahn, just off Albistrasse. We moved from UK 3.5 years ago and dd was born here (she's just 3). Also have ds who is 6.5. Perhaps we've brushed shoulders in Migros ! You could join the group in the meantime - a number of Mums-to-be do - and glean info etc as and when.

Yes, I also have a Mothercare'Jogger' which is in fact just a three wheeler pushchair that has slightly more rugged wheels and that i use (or rather used to use) for everyday needs.

My Jogger is a Baby Jogger Mark IV I think, or it might be the IIV. I am very happy with it

I would just suggest that you make sure the wheels are quick release as it makes it easier for transporting (mine only fitted in the boot of my car if I took off the front wheel, very easy procedure).
You want a 'lead' type thing that you put around your wrist to stop the Jogger ever running away from you and I would say you definitely want a brake.
The chassis on the Baby Jogger has a lifetime guarantee and the seat cover has quite a long one too which is a good sign huh?
Only other thing that I think I would have liked is adjustable handle height as I'm not very tall.

Oh and to answer your original question, we had a 3 wheeler for dd (not a jogging one specifically but a Quinny) which was great in snow ,up moutnains and to walk down to the town with, but also used a Baby Bjorn carrier and then Maclaren buggy for trips on public transport and in shopping centres.

I've got a Baby Jogger II, which we got specifically for running (both on and off-road), but have also used for off-road walking; we've taken it on all types of terrain - snow, beaches and across Dartmoor. It's brilliant for running, really lightweight and easy to manoeuvre (sp?). I really think you need a proper jogger for running, as opposed to a three wheeler pushchair, which may not be as light (lots have swivel front wheels as well, but you need a fixed wheel for running). You will definitely need a buggy as well; my jogger is too big for pushing around shops (its too long), and a buggy is quicker to collapse, and easier to load shopping onto and get in and out of the car. Ds went in the jogger from a couple of months old (he's now 3 and pushing him is getting harder!), for running on roads, and we took him off-road from about 6 months I think. Dd is 5 weeks old, so I'll probably put her in it for a gentle jog in a few weeks (she's a bit smaller than ds was). My jogger has a fixed seat, but I think the new models have reclinable seats now, so more suitable for little ones (but stick to on-road running until they're a bit bigger).

Thanks, everyone for your advice! It looks as if a Baby Jogger is the way to go! ...and perhaps another general use one.

Liz, any idea of the best place to look for this in CH? Oh, we live on Zelgstrasse. I had a look on Xpatxchange but there are so many different groups. Which one do you belong to? And when do you meet?

Haven't specifically seen the Baby Jogger here. You could try here A friend got a good deal on a stroller there and said they had a wide selection. Otherwise there is a baby shop in Adliswil - Panda Bebehaus - just past the Intersport - who might be able to order one for you and stock a wide range of other baby stuff. Over the border in Germany there is large baby store in Konstanz or in France there is an Aubert at Colmar (may be one closer too, as it is a chain) , but prices less competitive.

The Yahoo Expat-Moms group is mainly internet based but there are girls' nights out in Zurich every few months, family parties and some day time coffee meets too. It covers Switzerland as a whole but there is a significant Zurich area membership. There is also a Families-in-Zurich info site and an Expats-In-Zurich site which, I believe, has a wider cross section of single, couple and family members and a more active social scene. Do you subscribe to Mothering Matters or the New Stork Times as they are really good sources of information and other local groups, especially for mums to be and new mums.
