Toaster trauma

Apologies for the over the top title. Over the last 3 years we've had to buy 3 toasters.

The first two ended up cutting off power to the whole house every time we used it which we felt was a sign all was not well. Latest one has lasted a year and now smells like burning plastic.

They keep dying after the guarantee runs out. We do use it a lot. 3-4 times a day, potentially more since March 2020 Angry.

I'm looking for toaster recommendations. What have been your power toasters that have lasted the distance.

We haven't been buying cheap ones. First two were around 80 quid. Can't remember make of first or second but both expensive, decent brand. Third was Aldi and not as expensive but we were getting fed up 😆.

Which toaster should we get that might last a bit longer?

Dualit Classic 5 problem free years to date. I have friends whose Dualits are 20+ years old. You can also repair them. I understand it’s only the Classic range that are this quality.

CruelAndUnusualParenting · 11/06/2021 08:19

We have a Dualit here. I'm not sure when we got it, probably 2017 or 2018.

Alonglongway · 13/06/2021 22:23

We have an 8 year old Dualit and I repaired it myself when a part failed last year. Parts easy to source and great how to videos online

dinochum · 18/06/2021 07:38

Check the socket they're plugged in to

ramblingmum · 19/06/2021 13:11

We have had our dualit since 2005 and it's still going strong

HoppingPavlova · 24/06/2021 14:48

We had the same issue and got a Breville Professional (not the same as a Breville Pro which appears to be around now, more a cross between that and the Smart but less ‘smart’ and more heavy duty). Got it from a specialty shop, the usual major retailers only had lesser cheaper models. Had it for 15 years now, never an issue, still going strong with everyday use. That’s probably jinxed it. Not sure if that helps though as not in the UK.

Wynston · 24/06/2021 21:41

I am saving for a dualit myself.
Like the idea it can be repaired.
Plain silver so wont date, easy to keep clean and in my opinion looks good.
Oh god when did life become so sad!!!

iloveicelollies · 25/06/2021 10:56

We still haven't bought one. Husband refusing to buy a Dualit so I've boycotted any other toaster until he relents. 😂 toastin under the grill is getting a bit old now

We've had a Swan 4 slice toaster for 20 years. It still works well and not needed to replace any parts

Penchantforfloralpatterns · 27/06/2021 18:10

Delonghi Argento , I got the original one seven years ago and it’s still going strong at a relatives house, I gave it away when I got a new kitchen three years ago and bought the same model in a different colour.

NotMeNoNo · 30/06/2021 09:31

You could look at catering toasters on Nisbets website for a more heavy duty one. Note not all have a commercial warranty.
Or save money and get a 2 slice one.

Appliances are mostly crap these days. We've had our Dualit Vario over 15 years and only needed 2 new elements at about £10 each.

Heronatemygoldfish · 01/07/2021 12:46

Dualit. We had one as a wedding present. That was in 2004... I'm just about to order a new timer for it because in the last week it's started sticking, and it's the only moving part so is the bit that fails. This will be its third one, but there's nothing wrong with the rest of it. I'm tempted to get a spare element while I'm at it. Once you get used to a Dualit, all other toasters are just weird.

My Dad has got through four non-Dualit toasters in the same time and doesn't use it daily like we do.

ThinWomansBrain · 04/07/2021 07:36

another vote for Dualit - mine is 25 or 26 years old this year, my sister has one of a similar vintage.
I've replaced an element in it twice in that time.
Mine is one of the models with a toastie-basket - also useful for thicker things like crumpets and muffins also, recently discovered, heating a sausage roll

Gilead · 04/07/2021 20:20

Ten year old Dualit, still looks brand new and works perfectly.

campion · 06/07/2021 15:24

Dualit classic as above. Had it since the last century, probably getting on for 25 years! We've replaced an element twice, which is very straightforward, and it's still going strong and doesn't have that annoying pop up thing- just lift the lever.
And it toasts really well.

81Byerley · 07/07/2021 09:59

We had the same problem as you, I've lost count of the number of toasters we've had. We bought a Sage and it's fantastic!

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 12/07/2021 12:55

@ThinWomansBrain

Forever in your debt Grin

Never thought on that!!! Thank you!

Duallit - 25 odd years.

iloveicelollies · 29/08/2021 12:48

Back to toasters.... does it have to be the dualit classic?

OP posts:
MistySkiesAfterRain · 09/09/2021 10:40

Yes because the elements are replaceable. Dualit Lite does not have replaceable parts. The elements are cheap and easy to replace.

When mine dies I am getting a Dualit.

MistySkiesAfterRain · 09/09/2021 10:41

On Dualit...how do you decide what colour to go for?

Presumably you don't know what colour your kitchen will be on 25 years. Bit stumped on that one.

TerrylikesYoghurt · 09/09/2021 20:41

Another Dualit Classic here, bought in early 90s. Went for silver so it would always fit in. We’ve had at least six kitchens in that time and it’s looked good in all of them!

MistySkiesAfterRain · 10/09/2021 06:51

Yes I'm thinking grey would go with everything.

ThinWomansBrain · 20/09/2021 00:06

dualit classic with a sandwich cage Grin
