Do I need a sleepyhead

Hi my friend has kindly donated me a cocoonababy. For those in the know, would it be worth getting a sleephead as well as I had imagined getting one of those. Thanks

Might be worth having a look at the safe sleep guidelines by the Lullaby Trust as sleep nests and positioners are not recommended due to increased risk of SIDS.

They are not safe and second hand mattress are definitely not safe either so I wouldn’t be using either of them.

I was also gifted a cocoonababy. It is a sleep positioner so not recommended for unsupervised sleep. The first time I put my new born in it it quite clearly pushed his chin on to his chest which is very dangerous. But it's great for carrying him around the house with me. Once he got to about 3 months old though I was happy for him to sleep in it. Sleepyheads are also only supposed to be used while supervised so I didn't see the point getting one.

Never had anything like that either - they go against safe sleep guidelines.

A decent flat mattress would be better, and buy mattresses - and car seats - new (second hand for all the other stuff!)

What everyone else said about SIDS etc but even putting that aside, not all babies like them! I was given one by a friend for my baby, but she’s 4 months old now and has never been fussed by it, happy to sleep in her next to me or Moses basket. If baby does like to feel snuggled up then swaddling is safer and cheaper! I know a couple of mums who used the sleepyhead loads who had a nightmare when their baby outgrew it and didn’t like sleeping in anything else. They’re also expensive and you’ll probably need another cover so you have a spare when washing and the covers are a fortune too! Pain to get off to wash as well. Personally I would put a bit of money aside for ‘wait and see’ purchases and then see what your baby likes 😊

No.

Rainbowsandstorms · 18/07/2021 16:05

No because they go against safe sleep guidelines. They were all the rage a few years ago before they were declared as being unsafe though so you’ll probably hear them recommended as a must have by people who aren’t aware the guidance has changed. I loved mine for my first born but didn’t use one for my second born due to the known sids risk.

Just to give the other side... We didn't buy a sleepyhead before our DS was born because of the guidelines. Then we ended up with a baby that literally wouldn't sleep if put down at all for the first 2 months - he would only sleep on us. And we were exhausted and falling asleep. He would sleep if you put him in the sleepyhead and in terms of safety this seemed like the better option. They are very expensive and not recommended though so I'd just wait until your baby is born and see what they are like. I bought the sleepyhead at 3am or something on next day delivery..

DS actually outgrew the sleepyhead really quickly (4 months) and we ended up co sleeping for a bit. He's now in his cot at 7m.

To PP I'm not advocating doing something which is against lullaby trust guidelines and actually I took these very seriously for me (and a couple of friends who did similar) it just seemed like a trade off between something quite unsafe (falling asleep with a baby on your chest) and something not recommended but which I knew that lots of other friends had done without problems (the sleepyhead). Not all babies are like this and I think some can be put down to sleep at night in a co sleeper/Moses basket/cot etc from early on.

I’d suggest waiting to see what your baby is like. I also had a baby that wouldn’t sleep other than lying on my chest and the sleepyhead was a lifesaver - I co-slept with him lying next to me in the sleepyhead . I know it’s not recommended but there literally wasn’t a ‘safe’ option that allowed me any sleep.

Thanks everyone for your recs. update, didn't get sleephead. Baby was born 3 weeks early last week 4lb 13 so too small for anything to be safe for a while other than the Moses basket which he is reasonably happy in for the moment. Long May that continue. Will update how cocoona goes once he's big enough.
