Farrow and Ball Modern Emulsion for a playroom /study?

Thinking about trying this out, but not sure if it is too kitchen/bathroomy in finish? Has anyone tried it? And I'd also welcome advice on neutral or slightly yellowy F&B shades for a darkish room...

I don't think you can go wrong with any F&B paint to be honest.

cremolafoam · 16/11/2007 21:04

i like 'citron'- it has a warm glow.
just wanted to say that 'dayroom yellow' is VERY bright - almost too luminous
I am having a quandry over 'rectory red' today

bodiddly · 16/11/2007 21:04

F&B colours are lovely but the finish isnt as resilient as Dulux. To be honest if it is for a playroom I would probably have it colour matched with Dulux and have their Real Life finish which is meant to be scrubbable etc.

Alva · 16/11/2007 22:05

Bodiddly, disappointing that Modern Emulsion still isn't tough enough - have had some iffy results colour mixing with Dulux. If you used the modern emulsion stuff, did it look good, or a bit too sheeny? If it looked good, am tempted to follow moondog's advice...

Cremolafoam - Rectory Red looks cheerful on my screen, but not sure how accurate it is!

it si more a hunting pink than a red.It is very rich and i can't decide whether my hall is jusy too dark for it.Have a tester pot here now and it is gorgeous but dh says it looks like a blood bath out ther in the hall.

Alva · 16/11/2007 22:35

You're braver than me, cremolafoam; my entire house is in shades of buff/biscuit/oak, and here I am looking for another neutral!

Will be checking out citron, btw; sounds lovely!

Farrows Cream is a soft colour good for dark rooms. String also works well (have used both in NOrtha facing rooms and they look good).
Dont colour match with DUlux. Beckers is better if you have a local stockist.
If not F&B eggshell is very durable, we used it in our kitchen and its still going strong afer 4 years and 2 DCs....

Alva · 16/11/2007 22:44

Ooh, was tempted by String but thought it might be a bit dark/greeny - but since you're used it in a north-facing room and it looks good, will add it to the tester-pot list!

String is a great colour, but we go to Johnstones/Leyland trade paint place and get them to mix the F&B colours in Johnstones paint - goes on really well and you can touch up grubby marks etc without having to repaint a whole wall - you can't do that with F&B paints.

amazonianwoman · 17/11/2007 22:43

F&B Slipper satin colour (or satin slipper?!) good if you want a very neutral colour...

Chipstick · 17/11/2007 22:45

We have F&B Stone in our living room - its a beautiful colour which always gets commented on.

We've had to touch up a few times due to greasy finger marks but you'd never guess - looks like we've only just had it done but nearly 2 yrs now.

amazonianwoman · 17/11/2007 22:52

Ooo, yes Stone is nice too - friend has that one and it's one of my faves

grannyslippers · 17/11/2007 23:05

I've only used the Modern Emulsion once and didn't like the finish at all - it is sheeny and not at all velvety like Estate Emuslion. My kitchen is done in Estate emulsion, in Farrow's cream and I'm very happy with the colour, it's quite sunny (makes me think of clotted cream). I don't really go in for scrubbing walls but have intentions to repaint the high traffic areas!

Pannacotta · 18/11/2007 10:10

Chipstick which number is Stone? Can't find it on my chart (which is a brand new onw so not sure if the colours have changed a bit?). There is Light Stone (green-ish), Stony Ground (beige) and London Stone (taupe) but not plain Stone.
IMO Citron might be a bit too rich given you wanted a neutral Alva.

Alva · 18/11/2007 20:40

Thanks all - very helpful! Grannyslippers - ordered a room's worth of Modern Emulsion (Farrow's Cream - thx Grannyslippers and
Pannacotta) before I saw your message so will just have to cross my fingers...

Alva - we've just done our whole house in modern emulsion as we did our old house in estate (before modern existed) and had some real trouble cleaning it. It doesn't look too sheeny at all. Have yet to test its washability though. We actually have fired earth eggshell in bathroom and kitchen and even that isn't too sheeny and is amazingly washable (pasta sauce off walls no probs) - I was thinking of using it in our conservatory which is our playroom but only didn't because I couldn't be bothered to go and get it (F&B 5 mins away, FE 15 - so am lazy I know !).

Wheelybug · 18/11/2007 20:51

Farrows cream is a lovely colour too - we have it in our dining room and in our old house had it in our through room. Would have had it more here but have dark victorian rooms and so plumped for quite a bit of house white which is a lighter yellowyer (?) cream which we're v. happy with.

Alva · 18/11/2007 21:17

That's a relief - thanks Wheelybug!
