Childrens Wooden Train Sets

Does anyone know about the wooden train sets for little ones where you clip the tracks together and the trains are magnetic and you can get various accessories to go with them - are the ones from different shops compatible with each other?

I have seen them in tesco, early learning and various places but wasnt sure whether you need to stick to a certain brand if you want to be able to add to it in the future?

elc, thomas and brio are all compatible, but i think elc is different.

there are loads on ebay too!

OracleInaCoracle · 14/11/2007 14:40

sorry, TESCO, not elc

stripeymama · 14/11/2007 14:41

They are all compatible IME - we have several sorts and they all fit together fine. One of the best toys we have, DD has loved it for three years now and still plays with it.

Tatties · 14/11/2007 14:42

I think they are usually compatible with each other. We got a set from Tchibo originally (which I really recommend btw), and have since been given some Brio bits - they all fit together

tortoiseSHELL · 14/11/2007 14:44

Tesco is the same as well, and Sainsburys. What we did was buy lots of cheap track from tesco, and then get some of the Thomas trains from ELC.

flowerfairy · 14/11/2007 14:46

We started with a tesco kit, one christmas and then over the last 2 years various shops have been bought & fit together-Chadd Valley(think that's Woolworths), brio, the proper Thomas trains, etc. They have all fitted together well (like jigsaw pieces) And it has never been a waste of money becasue ds still loves it and acts out various thomas stories, regularly. A bit disappointed because someone has bought him a plastic Thomas set for Christmas(it was a bargain apparently) and i will certainly be sad if it doesn't get used again.
I'm sure some sets say compatible with major brand. HTH -

thanks guys thats reassuring

dd is just 2 and not sure if she will play with it yet so wanted to try getting just a few bits to see and then add to it over the years

IKEA also do them and they are compatible with te Brio, Tesco etc.

LittleBella · 14/11/2007 14:50

Oh and IKEA are much, much cheaper than Brio!

tortoiseSHELL · 14/11/2007 19:28

The IKEA ones have those silly plugs though, which are eminently swallowable by little ones!

LIZS · 14/11/2007 19:36

Isn't the Tchibo set around this week ? Not sure if it is compatible but Tesco, Brio, Learning Curve and elc are.

[[http://www.tchibo.co.uk/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/uk/-/GBP/TdUkDisplayProductInformation -Start?ProductSKU=0011213 Tchibo bargain £17.50) iirc Ikea one has different length pieces which can make it hard to get a layout to fit together properly.

LIZS · 14/11/2007 19:40

try again !

AllBuggiedOut · 14/11/2007 19:48

Worth looking in TKMaxx too as they often have Brio sets half price.

liquidclocks · 14/11/2007 19:48

ebay's are really cheap IME...

either that or www.jesters.com

ChasingSquirrels · 14/11/2007 19:50

the ikea one doesnt fit quite so well to the others ime.

bumbleweed · 15/11/2007 12:26

brilliant - thanks for the info ladies - its a definite 'goer' for christmas present now and I wont worry too much about where to get it from

OracleInaCoracle · 16/11/2007 17:03

tah dah

piximon · 16/11/2007 17:21

Asda do a set that's compatible as well. Think it's around 60 pieces for under £12. DS1 was given a set last year to pad out his collection.
