Tri-scooter for a 3 year old - does she need safety gear?

We are thinking about getting a 3 wheeled scooter for DD1 for christmas. She is 3 and a half. Do you think I should get a helmet and knee/elbow pads - are they a bit extreme or considered essential? I can't imagine she will go very fast as she is very cautious.
Thanks!

My ds1 didn't have helmet until he got his first bike and no elbow pads etc until he got skateboard for 5th birthday. But he doesn't care about hurting himself
ds2 is 2 and has a 3-wheel scooter without helmet or pads and he manages ok.
Hope this helps.

have you read my thread of tonight in chat????? Dd went head first over the handle bars of her mini-micro scooter which has 3 wheels - elbox & knee pads a bit extreme but I really do wish she had been wearing her cycle helmet she was 4 in August

Oh cargirl - poor dd, hope she's not too battered and bruised

My DS has the Micro Scooter with two wheels at the front which he got last Christmas when he was 2.9. He wears a helmet as he is really confident on it and can go pretty fast. As Cargirl says, they do occasionally fall over the front of the scooter and fly forwards so I think a helmet is definitely needed to protect their heads. Hope she loves it - it is the best thing I have ever bought for my DS.

dd goes really really fast on it and the wheels got caught in a small dip - her face is all smashed up and very sore Get a helmet that is designed to protect their nose as well by it protruding a bit more than standard at the front IYSWIM

dd can keep up with her older sister on her bike!
