Single bed for toddler - how to choose

Do you buy a normal single bed or a special child's one?

We need to get one really quickly as DS (23 months) can now climb out of his cot, and DD is bursting out of her crib so needs to move into his cot whilst he goes into a bed.

I saw the toddler bed = waste of money thread on here a week or so ago, and it's convinced me to go straight to a single bed.

Am thinking of this one, happy to spend the money if it's going to last him for years and years (and John Lewis do express delivery).

Any tips anyone?

i got a normal single for dd 18mths.

somewhat similar to the john lewis one only from a local company and at a quarter of the price!!!

if you look online you will probably see simiolar bedsteads to those you are looking at.

Ikea do a great bed that starts off small, with a bar to stop them rolling out, and the ends flip down to extend it as they grow, to make a proper single bed. We bought one and it has done all my 3!!

Ah the Ikea one sound like a better bet, want something sturdy though as DS is huge and likes jumping up and down in his cot.

I'd recommend a flexa bed

Sturdiest beds ever, DD + 3 friends all jump on hers at same time. Can add side rails to prevent them falling out, legs to make mid-height with den underneath or desk/drawers etc

Moved DD into hers at 2.4, she loved it. Loves it even more now that it has a ladder & den (she's now 3.5)

Shop around for good deals - got 20% off mine + fast delivery

Wow those Flexa beds look fantastic, bet they're expensive though, going to have a trawl now.

We got ours from Flexa direct but got a 20% discount.

I think the bed, full back rail and three-quarter side rail came to about £200 with discount - see here

Can't remember how much the Flexa mattress was - we got a very good quality sprung one with a very luxurious padded cover. Was pretty expensive but will last for ages as it's a full size single - and it's the comfiest mattress I've ever slept on!

TheChickenLady · 16/11/2007 11:10

Not too expensive then compared to my original choice, are they really really sturdy?

DH is going to love playing around with all the combos, will send him this thread now.

Definitely sturdy - enough for my 6ft3 17stone husband

They're well known for being very sturdy & well made.

The initial outlay is high but think how much longer they'll last than your average single bed or toddler bed.

We have the whitewashed version and the wood is lovely & smooth. The legs are v chunky, the support slats fix into place so don't move around. The mattress is just fab.
