One of my best friends has recently adopted a little boy. It was a long time all becoming official, but now it is they're having a "welcome" party. I want to take a present but really don't know what to take. Do I give a toy or something with a bit more meaning? He's now 3 BTW.

All ideas/thoughts gratefully received.

how lovely. i'd guess a welcome party would be a bit like a formal celebation in intent, even if it ends up like a normal kids' party. it's such a big deal, i'd go for a more formal present. like some crockery with his name on it... something for the home, rather than just a toy. that's what i would do.

Lovely idea. I agree with bakedpotato and would go for something with bit more meaning, what about a lovely book, collection of winnie the poo or something hardback that would last a few years

I think a keepsake is nic eon such an occasion. When I worked in the retail business popular gifts for formal occasions were kids silver/stainless steel knife, fork, spoon sets, money banks and, most popular of all, photoframes. You can get them with familiar characters on or just really nice children's motifs in silver, china, pewter and so on. Department stores would sell them or specialist jewellers. Otherwise how about something more abstract - plant a tree, adopt a star or something of that ilk

How about a multi-frame photo frame so he can fill it with photos of his new family and friends - for his bedroom wall.

How about something like the baby book of baby's first year, but it would be our first few months with you book...

Some lovely ideas, thank you. I guess it could be quite an emotional day in many ways so something with meaning that will be kept into the future is the way to go. I may get him a toy too, just so he doesn't find the present too boring!

Thanks again.
