ETHERNET connections - anyone got one?

Tell me about it but first let me tell you my problems

I have just sent Orange their Livebox back cos it was sh!te and their customer support even worse! I am now with Zen with a basic USB connection. My pc seems to be fine until mid afternoon when it all goes pear shaped and i get disconnected every few seconds. Zen have talked me through some stuff, BT have tweaked the line but all to no avail. BT are having another go but I'm not hopeful. It is the crappy usb? Your guess is as good as mine.
Anyone got ethernet? how is it? what do I need?

(PS this is the second attempt as when I posted the first time, you guessed it - I got disconnected, (I'm copying it this time just in case!))

I will ask dh about this Nadine - but we've not gone this route ourselves

Hallo

I have ethernet, but I don't speak tecchy so I don't know if I can help much.

I think it's just another way to connect (USB being the other one). You need to buy a router with an ethernet connection.

DH is better at this than me - can ask him later if you like!

bagpuss · 08/11/2007 18:14

Erm, we've got one (with a mac) and I think all that DH did was to connect using the ethernet cable that came with our BT modem. Our connection is not totally stable all the time however, but I blame BT and also our recent upgrade to Leopard rather than the ethernet. HTH

the usb wouldnt cause you to keep disconnecting but it would be a lot faster to use ethernet.

to install ethernet you just buy the part, push one of the slots through and literally just plug the ethernet into the pc.

it really is that simple

tissy · 08/11/2007 18:18

my ethernet cable came with my router. My wireless signsl is a bit hit-and miss, so if I'm working, rather than playing I sit at my desk and connect the Mac to the router with the ethernet cable. I also tend to use the cable when banking, as I was told it's safer.

RTKangaMummy · 08/11/2007 18:21

I have got one connected to the desktop and have DOUBLED the speed from when I use wireless

NadineBaggott · 08/11/2007 18:45

just typed a post and got disconnected - grrrr

right, I need a hub and a cable? My speeds are pretty good 5/6+ mpbs.

WOuld you ask your techy dh's for clues to my disconnections girlies? ta

You need to ask BT how long the cable is between you and the junction box

It may be just over the road BUT the cable may go down and up the road before it comes to your house ~ like it does here

Also what the noise levels are on your cable

RTKangaMummy · 08/11/2007 18:51

And how far you are from the BT exchange

NadineBaggott · 08/11/2007 19:22

I'm about a mile from the exchange!

Thing is I've been here for over 12 months and only now getting problems.
