Family SUVS?

I'm biting the bullet and buying a 'new to me' car this year. I have two teenagers and also lug sailing stuff around at weekends so am thinking of a SUV

  • I don't fancy an estate yet! My budget is around £14k and it needs to be a petrol car as I do low mileage to work.

I'm thinking of the Honda CRV, Kia Sportage or possibly BMW 218iSE as these are the garages local to me. Any advice on these cars please? My Dad reckons BMW are expensive to service, but I was thinking they might hold their value more?

I'd love to hear your thoughts thoughts. Thank you.

Sorry for typo at the end of my post! I was typing on a phone and hadn't realised!

What do you have at the moment and is it being enough? The reason I ask is that SUV boots are typically smaller than the loosely equivalent sized estate (if that makes any sense!) and everyone I know who sails has an estate due to the amount of stuff they need. Sorry I can't comment on the models you've suggested, but just trying to work out a size comparison.

sailingmummy · 14/03/2021 21:44

I have a golf at the moment which is beginning to play up and has felt a bit small recently when myself and my teenagers are in it. I only sail at weekends, the rest of the time it's usually just me in the car commuting to work and some ferrying of kids

The Octavia (just the hatch, doesn't have to be the estate) has a large boot and will probably give you more space and headroom than most SUVs.

jaundicedoutlook · 16/03/2021 21:02

You could get a Toyota RAV4 hybrid, mid 2016, in your budget. Should be more than big enough for sailing paraphernalia. Also cheapish to service and Japanese cars tend to be reliable.

The Skôda Kodiaq has the biggest boot of all SUVs as far as I'm aware. Unless you go for the really high end ones
KetchupOnTheFloor · 15/04/2021 15:44

We have a Kia Sportage and the boot is not very big at all, great car apart from that but then we don't sail sadly, so I have no idea how big a boot you need.

Have you looked at Car Wow on YouTube? They do an overall car review and then a link in the description to an in-depth look at the car which includes loading suitcases into the boot. Also they use the same suitcases in each video so it is a good comparison. They also compare similar cars so Kia Sportage, vs Nissan Qashqai vs Hyundai Tuscon.

We used their videos to narrow down our search when Dh was looking to upgrade his car (similar to a Golf and the teens were very squashed in the back) which led us to the Sportage.

We're in the process of getting a Skoda karoq. Same size as a Kia sportage but with a bigger boot and better ride comfort. I know skodas get a bad name for not being cool, but actually they look a lot better n have better features that the Kia

Bagelsandbrie · 09/06/2021 08:23

Skoda Karoq as mentioned above is a great car, better boot space than a Sportage (which we have - I went for the Sportage as we’ve always had Kias and I love them as I know where all the buttons are but we looked at a Karoq instead and that was a lovely car). As much as I love our Sportage I do find it very slow, we do a lot of dual carriageway driving and everyone overtakes us as it takes ages to accelerate!

Yes- the car wow videos are excellent!

What about a Nissan Qashqai? If your budget can stretch a bit more, the Nissan X-trail is amazingly roomy. Just spent halfterm week with 6ft 13 year old DS and DH in a hired X-Trail. Was brilliant.

MancyNitford · 09/06/2021 08:40

We have a Suzuki Vitara, mid-2016 and it was around £12k. With your budget you could probably get a slightly newer one than that too. We also looked at a Seat Ateca which was similar in spec, space and price.

I'm very impressed with the Suzuki, having not had a Japanese car since a B reg Nissan in the early 90s. We've always been of the Ford/Volkswagen ilk. It feels solid, it's a comfy drive and has enough space for us, although we don't have baby stuff to cart round anymore those days are long gone!

MindyStClaire · 09/06/2021 08:40

We have a Hyundai Tucson and are very pleased with it. Changed from an Astra for the boot size, we needed to fit a buggy and suitcases when DC2 came along (I was the same in terms of not wanting an estate). Works perfectly for that but the boot isn't that long ago if length is an issue rather than volume for the sailing stuff you might be better with an estate.

Depends on which version you buy, some versions of the Karoq are slower than some versions of the Sportage.

I've not heard great things about BMWs in bad (Scottish!) winter weather. But maybe that doesn't really effect you..
I have a new to me 2016 Suzuki vitara too. Love it.

dozyman · 26/06/2021 15:16

@PrivateParty. Historically BMWs have been rear wheel drive, because it made them more fun to drive. This meant that they were not too clever in ice and snow. (Front wheel drive has the weight of the engine bearing down on the driven wheels, so there is more grip.) However, some recent BMWs, including the 218iSE to which the OP refers (presumably either the Active Tourer or Gran Tourer) are front wheel drive, so this criticism ought not to apply to them.

Pl242 · 28/06/2021 23:51

We have a Skoda kodiaq. It’s a great car and the boot is epic 😊
