I want the moon!

Does anyone know where I can get a realistic model of the moon? I have seen expensive moon globes for scientists, but I mean a toy one - could be an inflatable one, beachball style, just a plain model that you could hang up like a mobile, or even a pendant lampshade. For DS to have in his room.

And/or, a lunar surface playmat that looks like the moon surface, for landing rockets and astronauts on.

I would have thought these things would be popular toys but websearch has got me nowhere... thanks.

Is this too expensive?

fannyanne · 05/11/2007 20:12

GLTC do a light/ moon for £29.99. It is quite fancy, depends what you are willing to spend.

sweet, but expensive?

Moon in my Room -quite technical and scientific

mini LED light only £5.50

BettySpaghetti · 05/11/2007 20:15

oops sorry -just re-read your OP and saw the "realistic" bit -forget my 1st and 3rd links but the 2nd could be good

snowleopard · 05/11/2007 21:20

Thanks so much everyone! I am liking the Moon in my Room - as a total purist I have in mind one that's both realistic and properly spherical, but I think DS would love this anyway. He is moon-obsessed but more with the real moon not cartoony ones. (We currently have to fly his rocket up to the spherical paper lampshade in the front room. I'm amazed not to have found one of those with a moon surface print on it - seems like such an obvious idea to me!)

Buzz Aldrin designed a lamp for Habitat - not sure if it's still available there - scroll down here.

bagpuss · 05/11/2007 21:27

Habitat have them here. We saw them in the store and they are really good!

bagpuss · 05/11/2007 21:27

Ah, cross posted!

MrsBadger · 05/11/2007 21:48

cheap globe-type model

mustsparkleandburnmore · 05/11/2007 21:53

Now, I saw a moon surface playmat the other day. Was it ELC? Or is that too obvious? Let me think...

snowleopard · 05/11/2007 22:12

Ooohhhh I want the moonbuzz for my room now!

Will have a look in ELC for the playmat just in case...

OP posts:
mustsparkleandburnmore · 05/11/2007 22:28

Nah, couldnt see it on the eLC website. Really trying to think what catalogues I've looked at lately... I'm sure the only ones in the post were boogaloo and Hawkins(Actually, Hawkins will prob have something moony and good!), and the only ones I've picked up are Boots and Tesco Direct

AllBuggiedOut · 05/11/2007 22:45

Ooh, hope you can find the play mat mustsparkleandburnmore - sounds ideal for DS1 (4 years). Am also thinking of getting him a Moonbuzz for christmas - they're so fab!

VeniVidiVickiQV · 05/11/2007 22:50

OH DS has a "moon in my room" cant remember how much it cost - got it off ebay. It's a wall light with realistic markings on it.

Its fab - cant rate it highly enough.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 05/11/2007 22:50

oh betty's posted a link so I wont bother.

Truly brilliant. Go get one!

keepyourpuppydaviesindoors · 05/11/2007 22:54

you want the moon on a stick...

nother vote for moon in room here, ebay cheapest by a long way.

TeeJaye · 06/11/2007 01:04

Playmat from Amazon or you can make your own!

TeeJaye · 06/11/2007 01:14

Lunar mat - it's from an Education site so not sure if it can only be ordered through schools.

snowleopard · 06/11/2007 19:57

Thanks for these too - perfect. I love MN!
