Hi

I'm looking into used cars at the moment. Re engine size - do cars with smaller size eg 1.2, 1.4.. mean the car won't be as good on long journeys etc or have I just had smaller cars in the past that weren't very good/punchy?

Currently drive a 1.6 and I like how it handles long journeys but I'm wondering is this more to do with the car itself/age.

The smaller engines seem to be cheaper which would help as my budget isn't very big. Congrats if you got to the end and anyone of that made sense!

Basically I want a reliable car that can handle long and short journeys but I'm unsure of how engine size factors into choosing a car.

Depends on the size of the car but also the bhp generated. I have driven some small engined cars which have been fine but some that have felt dangerously underpowered.

Stick to a 1.6 and learn to drive more economically.

Bigger engines tend to accelerate better BUT depending on how old your current car is, dont discount testing a smaller engine. There have been some massive changes in {something technical} resulting in massive economy increases.
My civic, with a 1l engine, accelerates better than DH smaller, older, car with a 1.3l engine.

That will be due to the turbo.
