Can anyone recommend a skincare regime for teenage acne that works/worked?

My 14YO DD is increasingly struggling with spots. I really feel for her as her two best friends in comparison have lovely clear skin.

She's tried prescription Acnecide (Benzol Peroxide) but it doesn't seem to work. She currently cleanses with Bioderma micellar water but her skin is becoming very dry and I think she needs to change it.

I just wondered if anyone could recommend a product or regime that really worked for your son or daughter.

Hi there, very late posting, but what worked for my son was a session of microdermabrasion and laser. To clean up his skin etc and a very low level antibiotic.

Probably too late with this reply but I would recommend a consultation with a dermatologist to advise an appropriate treatment plan.

I had acne as a teenager and as pp have suggested, anything that can be bought over the counter is often a complete waste of time - or it was for me anyway!

Only thing that sorted it was a referral to the dermatologist & a year or so of treatment under them. I think I was about 14 so was really reluctant and embarrassed; my mum dragged me kicking and screaming in the end. I still have to go back every so often now, at 24, and really glad I was forced as it was life changing.

Good luck!

I will add though that if you’re not at the stage of referral, maybe ask your GP how they feel about prescribing some treclin gel - it contains tretinoin.

The reason I say this is because when my acne was bad, I was prescribed oral isotretinoin and it was the ONLY thing that worked for me. Tried everything before that. Topical tretinoin is essentially the same thing, except obviously as a topical gel rather than a pill. I was never tried on it as my acne was very severe so they went in harsh with the oral medication straight away, but it may be helpful for your DD.

Hope you manage to get it sorted!

A dermatologist - over the counter stuff didn't do much. By the time you try different over the counter things which don't work, the dermatogist might just be cheaper. I so wished my mother had taken me at 13 rather than enduring years of acne.

One of my sons developed unbelievably bad acne and he got the first available appointment. The same thing happened to the younger one although his was less severe. To look at them today you'd never guess there was ever anything wrong. We all took roacutane or its other name Isotretinoin - not all at the same time obviously - and it was like a miracle. (I took it about 28 years ago and my sons in the last 5 years or so.) We were carefully monitored while taking it. Topical things never did a thing for any of us.

Have you tried any of the cereve range. It has been amazing for my daughters skin.
Dd1 also swears by roche posay range.
There is a website where you can send images of your skin and it recommendeds products for you which a friend used and found very useful.

PrivateParty · 20/06/2021 17:59

Maybe I was just due to finally grow out of it, but the roche posay effaclar kit thing from boots, in conjunction with skin, hair and nails supplements seems to have helped me.

Roaccutane. Tried everything else. Ds the as monitored very carefully and has beautiful skin now. I regret not acting sooner.

My daughter had terrible acne at this age. Used the prescription gels and washes. That didn’t really clear it totally. She tried this over many years.

What’s worked without having to go on Roaccutane is this routine.

Cleanse and dry skin. Damp skin again with water and use a drop of hyaluronic acid eg The Ordinary.

Allow skin to dry then use moisturiser such as Bioderma hydrabio cream, allow to skin and dry for a few minutes.

Then use a factor 50 face sun cream such as Bioderma Photoderm or Australian gold botanical sunscreen face. These are tinted. Allow to soak in then you can apply any foundation if required.

Do this routine morning and night. Can add The Ordinary vitamin C once a day and a retinol once a week after the hyaluronic acid.

It has worked without having to resort to Roaccutane. She researched skin problems herself and the biggest key is the sun screen. This routine is perfect for any age , I have started it and my skin looks so much brighter.

Otc products are too mild. You need prescription strength treatments.

Acne is very treatable you just need to engage with the dr.
