Clarks shoe dilemna? What would you do?

Bought ds school shoes from Clarks. The assistant did all the measuring and poking and prodding they do once the shoe is fitted.
Ds wears to school for one day and can hardly walk home because the cuff of the shoe is digging in below his ankles.

£30 I paid for them, do I expect the shop to take them back having worn them for one day or do I go and buy another pair for ds.

I feel miffed at spending so much on a reputable shoe and having ds in pain, I cant make him wear them if they truly hurt both ankles?

What would you do?

I would take them back. They obviously were not fitted correctly. They should take the shape of a childs foot into account when recommending shoes.

TheApprentice · 31/10/2007 14:09

Definately take them back, thats not on.

Hello, btw, Tenalady you were the first person to speak to me on MN!

I've taken shoes back that have done that.

In fact, dd's did that last year and we took them back and they fitted another pair (and took huge care in doing so) without digging in bits. I think some children have bonier bits which mean some shapes do dig in and hurt (and often you can't tell till they've worn them for a bit).

Same happened to my toddler.I phoned the store and told them and they said to bring them back so we could change them.I have always found Clarkes to be fantastic.I would point out to them that they were obviously either fitted incorrectly of the shoes were unsuitabl for your childs feet either way they are unfit for purpose. That usually get the desired result.Good luck.

Tenalady · 31/10/2007 14:12

Phew thats a relief. Its just that I did see on the Clarks website that they wont refund if the shoes had been worn.

Yes, apprentice it was, and only about 8 months ago! I am trying to help with your mulitlink thread, being a teacher, but its not proving very fruitful!

Definately take them back. We have before in clarks, its their fault! Not had a problem, they have sorted it out with no stress. Make sure you go back.

I have taken shoes back to Clarks. They insisted they did fit but maybe the style didn't suit her Got a creidt note which another shop took. Twice they have not fitted my children right imo and I won't go to Clarks again.

Take them back. DS1 had a pair from their once which he couldn't stop falling over in. I took them back although he'd been wearing them for a few days (and had the bruises to show for it) and filled out a form and they changed them for a different pair. Never had a problem since.

Have also had to take a pair back to StartRite when within an hour of walking around they had rubbed a patch of skin off his foot. Different assistant said afterwards that his feet were to narrow for the style, which make a mockery of the first fitting he'd had. Never been back there.

PumpkinFang · 31/10/2007 19:45

Take them back definately. Knowing Clarks they'll have some spurious reason for not refunding your money Sorry I'm a bit cynical about them in my old age.

ADragonIs4LifeNotJustHalloween · 31/10/2007 19:52

I took back a pair of DS2s which were half a size smaller than his last pair. No problems getting a replacement pair even though they'd been worn. Clarks have always been very helpful IME.

andyrobo237 · 31/10/2007 21:19

Agree with the take them back - my dd's last pair had to go back after two days as her foot was cut - they tried to tell me she was fastening them too losely - not true as she fastens them tight! She put them on with no socks and could see the point which rubbed. We left with a new pair in a different style which fitted better and she had no problems with.

nannyL · 31/10/2007 22:48

This happened to my charge

he wore them for 4 days and they had cut his feet and made a blister and made his ankle bleed

they exchanged them for another pair (that did fit) without any fuss at all

in clarks

Take them back and ask for another style. I had this problem when I was little - apparently my ankle bone is very low so there were always only one or two Clarks styles that I could wear without it being painful. In fact I ended up wearing boys' shoes for a while (a character-building experience).

sunnylabsmum · 01/11/2007 05:32

Another good tip for softening the parts of a shoe which rub is to rub in soap from a bar. We are having to do this as we live overseas where getting decent shoes is nigh on impossible, so all my intentions of always having properly fitted shoes for DD have had to be thrown out of the window! Instead we grab shoes when back home and use soap to soften them if they are rubbing plus white tape on the sore bits of the foot. Over time it does improve but I agree if you can take them back do, just we sadly can;t

nappyaddict · 01/11/2007 07:47

take them back. ds had his first pair of shoes fitted the other week. they are the right size an everything but they keep coming off when he walks. so much so that one came off and he fell flat on his face and is now too scared to walk. i went into boots and explained the situation. they remeasured to check it was the right size (it was) and couldn't figure out what was wrong. i said i think the shoe must be too shallow for his foot cos he has a pair of bootee style ones from there that he manages to keep on fine. they were a bit but let me exchange them for a pair the same as he's already got but in a different colour.

Tenalady · 01/11/2007 10:15

Thanks all, Phoned the shop and they agreed to replace them. They admitted that the fitter was a trainee and that could of been the problem!
