VW GOLF petrol or diesel?

Plmoknijb123 · 03/02/2021 11:31

I’m planning on buying a golf (second hand) but can’t decide whether to buy petrol or diesel. I’ll mainly be doing short trips, school run etc and wonder whether petrol is better for this? But then again diesel seems more environmentally friendly. Any advice appreciated!!

Petrol for short trips

Definitely petrol for short trips and get a decent car not a bloody golf.

Erm, if you knew anything about cars, you'd know the Golf is a fantastic car

I know a LOT about cars and the Golf is shit. It used to be a quality product but those days are long gone. You’re far better off with a Toyota.

Petrol for short journeys. And I loved my Golf (16 plate, so not old). My DH is an automotive engineer (working in test and design) so he knows his stuff, and he rated it highly too. Great spec for the price. I've had 3 now, and had no issues with any of them. Great choice of car I'd say.

Petrol:

I think bristols about to tax diesel cars for driving through town... other places may follow suit

Elai1978 · 03/02/2021 18:14

and he rated it highly too

What does he make to the Golf and VW as a whole coming below average in reliability surveys? They used to make good cars but these days they’re a thin veneer of quality (soft touch plastics etc) over a very mediocre product. If you want reliability you buy a Lexus or a Toyota. You couldn’t pay me to drive a VAG shitter.

mouldyhouse101 · 03/02/2021 18:25

@Elai1978

Toyotas are fantastic. Come top in every recommendation.

But Golfs are also well known to be incredibly reliable and fantastic cars. Hence why you see so many of them on the roads

Elieza · 03/02/2021 18:25

Petrol for short journeys and if you want to go into town centres.

They say diesel is only better for longer journeys. And they will be banned from town centres in the coming year or two.

JellyBabiesFan · 03/02/2021 18:36

Petrol for short trips.

The Golf is a fantastic car as you can tell from ther general consensus. Elai probably does not know much about cars.

mouldyhouse101 · 03/02/2021 18:45

A quick look at @Elai1978 previous posts show that they know hardly anything about cars and have a rather poor idea of them and their value. And also just likes to tell people that their car is crap

minnie465 · 04/02/2021 06:02

Love my VW. Prob best to go for petrol for all the short trips.

Elai1978 · 05/02/2021 08:40

I guarantee I know more about cars than anyone else on this thread lol. It’s very clear that Golfs are poor, you only have to read reliability surveys to understand that. I work on quite a lot of cars and there’s a significant difference between German & Japanese cars. The Japanese cars generally come apart a lot easier although use a lot more bolts/fasteners, more than you’d think necessary. You can tell the difference in quality. I do like some German cars though, as things to use they can be pleasant but don’t kid yourself that they’re a quality product. If you’re looking at 2nd hand cars get something Japanese, but avoid Nissan - the Renault connection has just brought Nissan quality down rather than vice versa.

Petrol.
I’ve driven Volkswagen for the last 13 years and have never had a problem, reliable and easy to drive. Loved my Golf.
I don’t particularly like the look of the new Golf though.

@Elai1978 is a very bizarre character on this thread!

Erm ok Hmm I love my Golf, easily my favourite out of all the cars I have ever owned. I have a diesel but would look for an electric or hybrid for my next car. I would love a Tesla but that ain't gonna happen! Grin

ErrolTheDragon · 06/02/2021 14:05

I've got a diesel golf estate. It's a good car. DH and I had an Toyota avensis each before, they were a bit better. He now has a Toyota Corolla hybrid which is excellent.
We wouldn't get another diesel again for short trips, unfortunately the balance of environmental impact has swung from their better CO2 emissions to their worse particulates and NOx., especially in towns.
