anyone know much about these, i know you can record off tv and i know that you can convert your video camera films to dvd, and convert all video tapes to dvd but not sure if the hard drive type is better than the other sort or what?

onlyjoking, dh is currently waiting for a Philips one to be delivered from Amazon - he's so excited it's quite amusing. I'll let you know what he thinks when it arrives and he gets it set up

we've had panasonic dmr-50 which we flogged on ebay after 6 months as we wanted a hard disc & dvd recorder. It was a good machine, had a very useful 'timeslip' feature which meant you could rewind whilst recording but we found it annoying to mess about with the discs all the time. We now have a JVC hard disk recorder with a 160 gig disk drive which also records to discs. It's been great particularly as we only have four TV channels but this way it's so easy to record programmes and we seem to get a lot more out of telly. If you get one go for one with a 160 gig HDD, otherwise you have to back up to discs all the time. Having said all this, both machines have thrown wobblies at times, which is really annoying, though the panasonic was less reliable than the JVC.

We've just bought a Liteon cheapie, which is a DVD +R / +RW which just about does what it says on the box. There is a more upto date model which also does -R/-RW which apparently is more suitable for editing. It also has videoplus, as with ours it's abit like going back to the 80's with setting the timer and you've only got to get one thing wrong and you've missed your programme. Have a look Here or Here for more info on DVD recorders.

PS. Hard drive is better for day to day recording and DVD is better for archiving.

Dh bought me a phillips one last xmas (why ????)
I hate it, only my 7 yr old can actually play a dvd on it and I have recorded once on to it (from Tivo), never worked out how to actually record from tv etc. Even DH has admitted defeat and he is a technobuff computer megawhizz (and he bought the bl@@dy thing!!!!!!)
