Only we have, and it's looking v like a phishing email - the "enter card details" screen is not https and has no padlock, and it requires entry of your PIN ("if invalid your account will not be verified")

DO NOT REPLY! DO NOT GIVE CARD DETAILS!!!

DH is on to AOL now and it's definitely not one of theirs.

I get these all the time. 'Please confirm your bank details or your account will be suspended' etc. Luckily I know what to look for (ie the lack of an https but the bad spelling and poor grammar are also a bit of a clue) but there must be loads of people out there falling for it.

This one isn't like that though, Lyra - it looks and reads like a genuine email from AOL.

Dear AOL Member,

This confirms that your AOL payment method has been updated to reflect the new information you provided. You can make payment method changes at AOL Keyword: My Account throughout your monthly billing cycle if you decide that a different payment method would better suit your needs. Please note however, that the billing method on record at 10:00 AM EST on your billing cycle date will be the one used to process your account charges.

You can access America Online`s secure, self-service Billing Center by going to AOL Keyword: My Account. Here you can review and modify your AOL account information online, anytime.

Please Remember: If your account information is not updated within 48 hours then your ability to use your AOL account will become restricted!

Sincerely,
Member Services
AOL, LLC.

That one is a bit slick - they've done their homework. Another thing to look out for though is when they don't address you by name. If they are genuine they will know your name and not call you 'Dear AOL member'.

WendyWeber · 29/10/2007 21:02

Well you know that and I know that, but DH didn't know that and I bet a lot of others wouldn't either - luckily his instant reaction was to check with AOL Help online. The page that asked for card details (including PIN ) also asked for zip code and Social Security number so they're presumably after naive Americans.

Thing is as soon as I saw it I googled "AOL phishing" and instead of an email address to forward things to (DH was given one online) it was all about how they helpfully filter out phishing emails...here

It does link to a thing about phishing for your AOL account billing information, and what official AOL emails look like, but the initial message is "don't worry about phishing with AOL" and that actually isn't helpful.

Actually I did have a very similar one from PayPal that looked genuine. I reported it to them and they confirmed it wasn't one of theirs.
These batards must make a fortune from unsuspecting members of the public.
