Does a Nintendo DS really cost £100?

I had a conversation with ds2 today. His birthday falls just before Christmas. He has asked for a Nintendo DS along with several other lesser presents. I told him he would not be getting one as we can't afford one and he became quite upset. He is not normally a spoilt child, in fact, as the second of three boys and a girl, and with his birthday so close to Christmas, he actually misses out on some things his siblings get. I suggested he might like a CD player as both the other boys have one each and I want to get one each for him and his sister too, but he became even more upset at the suggestion. It is clear to me he has his heart set on a Nintendo DS and I want to be able to give him one.

So I googled prices. GULP. Do they really cost £100? I wouldn't want a second hand one, but is it possible to buy them any more cheaply?

I'm not sure, I would presume you get a full year warranty because you've bought it from a GAME shop. Their website may explain in more detail.

Haven't read this through, so this might already have been said - is it a DS or a DS Lite he wants? We've been offered £40 trade-in on a DS lite for our DS (unboxed) and will probably get about £30 if we sell it. DH was offered a DS pink (not lite) boxed, as new with 2 games for 80. Might be worth getting a preowned DS and buying a case and the other palaver - I think we got one for 12.99.

LOL, I have checked the Nectar site again and I could claim a grand total of £5 off the Nintendo DS!

I had amassed £67 nectar points- just got one from argos for £33!

DumbledoresGirl · 29/10/2007 16:32

You lucky thing. How long did it take to amass that amount of points? I see Nectar has a calculator thingy so you can work out how long it will take you to save up for something but I don't shop regularly at Sainsbury so a) I know I won't save up enough in time and b) I can't predict how often I will find myself in Sainsburys.

Hi - I've just bought one for dd1. The best deal I could find was Amazon who are doing a ds lite + game for £110.

WestCountryLass · 29/10/2007 16:48

They are expensive but DS has really played with his so to us it is worth every penny. Could you give him the DS for his birthday and then a game for Xmas. And maybe try and get other people to get/put towards getting more games for Xmas.

You can get games 2nd hand too but most of the top 20 games are £25-£30 (gulp). Our DS has bought his with birthday money. Usually on birthdays/Xmas we buy a main present and bits and bobs and this year DS literally jsut got the games and didn't expect more things as he was happy with what he got (and so he should be).

brandnewpumpkin · 29/10/2007 19:07

Not a recommendation, but: there are two preowned DSes (not lite) on the bottom of page 2

coolkat · 29/10/2007 19:16

Hi
I bought DD one for xmas from argos at the weekend, as long as you reserve it online you get the Black Nintendo ds, Accessory pack and either the incredibles or scooby doo game for £99.95 and you get a five pound voucher.
The offer was in the sun on Saturday and finishes tomorrow night.
Good Luck

Gingerbear · 29/10/2007 19:18

Dumbledore - I use nectar card all over - not just Sainsbo's: BP filling station, Debenhams, even Ford Garage - car servicing, TalkTalk bills, Brewers Fayre. I think it took about 18 months to collect the points, was wondering what to do with them all, then DD asked for a Nintendo DS lite for her birthday, so I told her she would have to save her £1 weekly pocket money (bless her, she has saved £30!!)

There is a website where you can get good deals on 'bundles'
Gadget Asia

Will the US ones play the UK (PAL) games though?

Also I have an Argos tip

They have a deal ATM where you spend £100 and get £10 vouchers. Ends 31st Oct I believe. Here is a nifty trick

Buy £100 vouchers. Recieve £10 voucher free
Go back and use £100 to buy DS lite (and something else small to top £100). Pay with your vouchers and recieve another £10 free voucher.

Effectively making your DS lite just £80.

bozza · 29/10/2007 22:03

DS's DS Lite plus case etc and one game cost us £116 from Comet. And that was with 10% off, because I went to the portacabin outside the flooded Comet in Rotherham (I work there) and got the 10% voucher and then sent DH to a Comet in Sheffield (DH works all over the place) where we were able to claim the discount.

DumbledoresGirl · 29/10/2007 22:05

sKerryMum, I will have to discuss it with dh when I see him. The only person I can think of is his boss who is in America.

Thanks for all suggestions. I will discuss them all with dh.

Just wanted to bump this incase you've not seen the other ds thread.

Use this code TEG876CHH198

online with John Lewis. If you spend £100 it takes £20 off your shopping, free delivery as well. So I got a ds and a cheap xmas decoration for just over £80.
