not got one but Ds asked for vtech one. When dh looked at them both[he is the technical one] he said screen on vtech was bigger and plays games etc too so was better value for money.

Both are on offer at argos at the min I think.

WestCountryLass · 28/10/2007 20:51

Great, thanks for that info, will look into it

we have the fisher price one..... it's pants! Robust & easy to use & makes some good noises. But picture quality is just so rubbish - a real disappointment

Marina · 29/10/2007 14:36

Agree with saltcod - we don't have the Fisher Price one but know someone who did buy it and they thought it was a total waste of money. What's the point of a sturdy camera if the pictures are useless...

stealthsquiggle · 29/10/2007 14:37

Sorry, Marina, but I disagree completely. DS has taken some really good pictures with his and he loves it.

Racers · 29/10/2007 14:40

Interesting, confirms my suspicions about that product. I noticed there was no info on the packaging or in catalogue specs about how many pixels or mega pixels it used. Not many by the sounds of it. The advert shows a crystal clear picture having been taken but no small print saying it was 'simulation only' or anything.

stealthsquiggle · 29/10/2007 14:46

Pictures are 640*480 pixels.

On my profile is one of DS's efforts.

Racers · 29/10/2007 14:51

he he!

Racers · 29/10/2007 14:52

oo no, I thought you were joking and meant the b&w one - the giraffe is quite good! maybe they don't blow up big so well but they look ok at that size

DirtyGertiefromnumber30 · 29/10/2007 14:57

im trying to decide between the fp camera and the vtech one atm for ds. Has anyone got the vtech camera? whats it like?

the fp camera has really mixed reviews on the internet. Theyre not cheap either are they, so i need to get it right!

WestCountryLass · 29/10/2007 16:53

I know, I could nopt believe they cost that much, I thought £30 max

I think the giraffe picture is good too

Also with the VTech one SD card is sold seperately, how much are they? And is the SD card included with the FP one (it leads you to believe that on the Argos site but its not clear)?

SD card isn't included with the FP one - we had to invest an additional £6 to get one for DS. It has some memory, though - so not completely useless when it comes out of the box

We have one for my 3 year old. I think it is quite good for that age. The scree picture quality is very poor and I assume that is what everyone is talking about. We have not tried to download any to the computer yet as he is too young to take anything proper. But I assume it would look fine on the computer. My older son (6 years old) has this one www.amazon.com/Vcam-Digital-Video-Camera-Colors/dp/B0009S4UPO which is excellent. It takes video as well as stills and is tiny. He carries it everywhere. However, it is not suitable for under 5's really as it is not sturdy like the fisher price one. It also does not have a flash so less goof for indoor stills.

I think you have to decide what y ou want to get out of the camera. If durability is a must for a toddler, then get the fisher price one. But if the child is older, a proper digital camera may be better.

DirtyGertiefromnumber30 · 29/10/2007 18:16

WCL, the vtech one holds 120 photos without the SD one, which i think is plenty anyway.

I think if we go for either we just have to accept them for what they are, that they ARENT going produce amazing pictures (the vtech one is 0.3 pixels!) and that they are just a toy at the end of the day. Ds will just enjoy having his own camera which takes real pictures (and it will get his grubby little mitts of MY camera!)

WestCountryLass · 29/10/2007 19:19

Yes, it is for a 3 year old who has broken 2 digital cameras already and wants to take lots of photos (love her)!

Coolio, well I think I will be getting the FP pink one as DD said tonight Fatehr Xmas might bring her a pink camera if she is good girl...

Thankyou for this thread, we were going to get the kids one each for Christmas but may rethink it now. So, Vtech is better quality then?

tortoise · 29/10/2007 19:39

I'm getting my DD's the vtech one(bought one today on special in argos!). From the info from Argos it sounds better. Once DD1 isn't looking i will have a play with it and see if its ok.

DirtyGertiefromnumber30 · 29/10/2007 19:40

they are probably much of a muchness 3D.

Im going to get the Vtech but not have too high expectations of the picture quality. He's 4 so he wont be bothered either way, he just will enjoy the novelty of having his own camera.

FWIW, the vtech has games and a video function on it as extra.

loujay · 29/10/2007 19:43

We got the fisher price one for DD and she loves it, takes photos of everything (including all meals) and records her day on it.
I dont think kids care about megapixels, she just likes having prints of the crap that she has taken photos of

3Ddonut · 29/10/2007 20:25

Thanks everyone!!! It seems that we've got better cameras than we were going to get and saved ourselves £30 in the process!!!

I love Mumsnet!!!!!

omeN666 · 29/10/2007 20:39

We got the v tech one but I havent opened it, need to really. just thought it worked out better and the games/silly imaging bits too will make it more 'fun' Not expecting superb pics but just to get him of my phone on the mobile..or away from our family one..am also sure the girls will have some use out of it.

tortoise · 29/10/2007 20:47

Have just been having a play with it and it looks quite good. Screen pic is cleap. Games are basic but ok. Video is good too. Plays back with sound.
There is a lead to view pics on the tv. Pics not such good quality on the tv but fine for my 4 and 3 yr olds!
So far i am pleased with it.

3Ddonut · 30/10/2007 20:45

I have bought two vtech cameras for the kids for Christmas and I'm very pleased with them (and the saving too!) Thankyou MNetters!!!

dilbertina · 31/10/2007 23:10
