I've seen the fisher price one but are there any others? Are they any good? Or are you better off buying a normal digital camera of a simular price and teach your child to repect it?

I don't have the answer but am watching carefully as am considering exactly the same for dd's Christmas. ELC have 20% off the FP one atm (think it works out at £48) but i still haven't gone for it yet...

Much, much better getting a normal digital camera of a cheaper price tbh. The Fisher Price one (owned by Mattel spit) is about £70 iirc? You can easily get a camera with more megapixels and as easy to use at around the £40 mark.

I thoroughly recommend going to your local Jessops and getting to hand hold the cameras. The staff there are usually pretty knowledgeable and help you get most bang for your buck. Keep an eye open in places like Tesco or Asda as quite often they have very good bargains on basic cameras, too.

In my experience with my eldest, the thing to look for is a large LCD display which is still visible in normal daylight (at 6 years old, he can't really get to grips with the viewfinder concept) and either a good autofocus/easy to use zoom or (rarer, but better as a starter camera, imo) a fixed lens.

As a very quick flick through the internet, what about this praktica camera. 5 MP, only £40 and best of all... pink (they do other colours if your dc is a boy, don't panic )

RubberDuck · 26/10/2007 14:15

(In comparison, the Fisher Price camera is £65 and only has 1.3MP . That's a real rip off, imo.

I've just found this one, not sure whether it is any use or not but as it's pretty cheap and dd is only3 I think I might go for it... www.amazon.co.uk/Disney-Princess-Micro-Digital-Camera/dp/B000SKOSVE/ref=pd_bxgy_k_h_b_cs_img_a/203-8 883140-8706365?ie=UTF8&qid=1193404426&sr=8-1

We got ds3 the Vtech camera from ToysRUs for his 3rd birthday recently. It is great for him, easy to use and also has fun things like putting ears/hats onto pictures and a few games. It can also take video. Although the picture quality might be better with a 'real' camera most of his pictures are poor due to him moving and at least it seems very stong.

I would recomend an olympus mju camera for a child of a reasonable age. I think DTDs will be getting my hand me down soon.

They are one of the few cameras where the body is made out of metal not plastic....great for dropping!!! It is also weatherproof so splashproof and stuff. A sturdy little camera.

OTOH they arn't the largest on hte market, and I doubt they are the cheapest so I think the child would have to be 6-7+ from that point of view.

We have avoided the FP one as it is very expensive for the quality you get.

ScaryMonsterStories · 26/10/2007 14:26

Scrap that - they don't seem to have the mju 300/400 on hte market anymore and I doubt you would want to pay £100 for a 7meg camera for a child

Sorry forgot to say dd is 6

I was thinking of gettng my 4 yo the Kid-Tough digital camera(£59.99), so I too would like to know if they ae any good!

rosealbie · 26/10/2007 17:42

I was looking at FP ones and although they are attractive in a child-friendly way, the spec is not very good for the money. I have just bought ds (6) and dd (3) one by IT Works from Comet, seems very similar to the praktica one recommended earlier, same price and comes in pink or silver. This one does have a sliding panel that goes over the lens and turns the camera on and off.

RubberDuck · 26/10/2007 17:52

That's a good idea having a sliding cover - protects the lens a bit better, imo.

rosealbie · 26/10/2007 17:58

The IT Works one is a DSC-568S if anyone is interested. I also should have said that they are normally £49.99 but have £10 off at the moment in Comet. They are 5.1 Megapixel and have a 2.4 inch screen.

I bought a fisherprice one for my 2 and half year old and she manages really well with it. Although the sreen pic quality isn't great, she has learnt how to use it really well and the binocular style use is good for that age I think. She has dropped it lots and it has withstood all that which I'm not sure a normal one would. We have put in a 1gb memory card in the camera which means she can get loads on there and you can download the pics although I've not done that yet to see what they're like. I recently saw the vtech one in a catalogue and wondered if that would be any better. Not sure. I'm still glad i got what I did. She can have a better camera when she gets older and isn't so prone to dropping it. Technology will have moved on by then too! Good luck!
