DD will be just two when new baby is born in march - so will need to move her out of cot and buy her a new bed.. just not sure what to do...
Do we
a) get a toddler bed and then have to buy another bed in a few years time - but like the idea of having one thats her size and height to make transition easier
b) buy bunk beds that can be split into two but can eventually used for dc2 as well so good long term invesment but size and height of a proper single bed might be too much for 2 year old??
or c) another alternative??

Don't like the look of the extendable beds cos they only come with a foam mattress and dh wants to get a 'proper mattress'.
Advice much appreciated!!

I personally wouldn't bother with a toddler bed, they outgrow them too quickly, so more money spent on different sized bedding.

DD moved into a full sized single bed at 2.4 with no problems at all, but it does have rails around as it could be converted to a midsleeper (with ladder, den underneath etc - just done that at 3.4 and she LOVES it) We put the bed up in her room for a few nights while she was still in her cot, to get her used to the transition.

We have a white Flexa bed which can be converted to mid-height, high bed, bunk beds etc etc - loads of options! Not cheap, but you can often get 20% off. And the mattress is the comfiest I've ever tried

my little one loves his toddler bed - is from john lewis but got the frame second hand and new mattress from blooming marvellous. they are so cute too - also if u get a toddler bed your youngest can move into it at a later date too. good luck

We never bought children's beds, we just bought ordinary single bed ones. They were quite high, but that was good because they didn't climb out of them once they were in bed! Both were in beds by 2yrs.

We didn't bother with toddler beds...

For my dds we bought bunkbeds with a double bed at the bottom and single at the top because the amount of times they crept into our bed we thought that they must quite like sleeping in a double bed... we often find them either on the top bunk together or both on the bigger bed! There have been no problems so far!

For ds, we bought a single with a proper mattress that was quite low to the ground and he loves that.

Mine were 2.5 before we moved them out of cots however.

I'll try to take some pics of the beds and put them on my profile tomorrow if you like?

bed, sheet, wot?

gigglewitch · 23/10/2007 00:15

we put DS1 in a 'normal' 3ft bed and did "big" room up for second birthday; he loved it. DS2 went to share with DS1 when he was 20mo and we bought pine bunk beds but used them separately until this year (he's now just 4)so they were quite low; recently DD decided at 21mo that the c-o-t was no longer in favour (flippin girl thing. i wanted to leave her in it for ages yet!) so bought her a toddler bed because
a) she is tiny, and
b) the room is tiny. oh, and
c) the cot bedding fits it.
Just wish they sent the superglue to stick her in it with. Someone on MN suggested velcro PJ's and sheets. ohh i wish...

I reckon it's a personality thing more than anything else!! When moving older child to make room for new one (obv twice) we did it before older child knew i was pg so didn't relate the two things. We also made a point - ok and extra work - of taking the cot to bits each time so it wasn't still the former owner's property IYSWIM...
sorry i haven't really given u any real answer have i - except that they all have worked for us so i don't think there is a good/bad option!

RoyKinnear · 23/10/2007 00:22

i keep mine in cots till 3
then toddler bed (sweet antique thing but have had ikea)
then big 5 onwards

MorticiasMother · 23/10/2007 00:34

we get one bed and when they don't fit in we chuck em on t'floor

seeker · 23/10/2007 05:46

Mine went atraight trom moses basket to futon mattress on the floor. Bypassed the whole cot/toddler bed thing altogether.

castille · 23/10/2007 08:14

I don't like toddler beds (or foam mattresses!), they cost a lot more long term and you still have to move them into a proper single at some point.

How about borrowing/buying a cheap moses basket for the baby to give your DD a bit more time in the cot, if you think she's not ready for a big bed just yet?

We have the same age gap and that's what we did to give DD1 a bit more transition time because she didn't seem ready for a big bed. We bought her a full-sized, lowish single bed and a bed guard which we put up in her room before the baby was born and she moved to it gradually when she was 2.3-2.4. Then we put the cot away for a month before DD2 moved into it so she didn't feel pushed out (she was very attached to her cot!)

BosworthBear · 23/10/2007 09:07

We went for swinging crib to extend need for 3 months and then a single with guest bed underneath, we pulled out the guest bed to make a wide step to aid getting in and as protection if they fell out (actually only happened once and she just slept on that instead). Now has added advantage for sleep overs since she has a spare bed in her room.

wheelybug · 23/10/2007 09:11

DD went into the bed part of her cotbed at 2 for a few months but was in a normal 3 ft bed by 2.5 (and in fact slept in a few before this on hols) without rail but you could get a normal sized bed and a bed guard to begin with ?
