Lightweight travel cot?

Anybody know of (and where to get) a lightweight travel cot? I am not talking about the standard folds-up-to-a-rectangular-shape and fits in a gym bag type thing, but something that I could carry easily on public transport. (No car). Also, I saw a lightweight fold up bassinet type thing for young babies somewhere, but can't remember where. Any ideas? We are going on a 20 hr flight at Christmas with a 3 month old and don't want to rely on Am. Airlines to provide the sky cot, due to previous bad experience.

I've seen a fabulous light weight pop-up travel cot (for little babies only - ie. before they can sit up) in lots of the baby catalogues - I think it's about £30. I think it's in Blooming Marvellous, Great Little Trading Company and maybe PHP baby. If you can't find it I can look up a link for you.

Definately got 2 or 3 different styles in the JoJoMamanBebe catalogue - cheapest £30, most expensive £50. The niftiest one I've seen (and am going to buy!) is the Samsonite one for £30 - it folds down to a bag "27cm in diameter" with a shoulder strap. HTH

Thanks, I will definitely check those out.

I forgot to say that the travel cot thingy I am looking for is for an older child, ie, a cot substitute. Further suggestions?

I don't think there is anything out there other than the Samsonite (suitable until the baby can sit), or the standard folding ones. We have a Petit Star which is pretty lightweight and folds easily, but its not something you could take on a plane! Is it mainly for the flight you want it for?

Haven't seen anything around for bigger babies other than the standard travel cots. How about using a bed-guard on a bed while you're away - that would be smaller to carry (no good on the flight obviously !)

BTW - Great Little Trading Company has the samsonite pop-up bassinett at £24.99 which is the cheapest I've seen it.

There was a BBC programme fairly recently called "Best Inventions" or something similar which featured a woman who had invented a lightweight travel cot. I missed most of the programme, but caught the bit which said that it had been bought up by Mothercare and would be in the shops by the end of the month. I looked at the Mothercare website last week, but no mention, sofar, but might be worth giving your local M/care world a ring to see when it would be available to have a look at! It was called the Babydux Travel Crib, and from what I briefly saw, it looked smaller than an average travel cot, but larger than the Samsonite/ similar.

If you have a look on this site, Phil and Ted , they have a very lightweight cot called the Kiwi Traveller - based on the same technology as lightweight tents. Downside is your dearest is on the floor, and if they are very agile they will almost certainly be able to get out. It is about £60 on the current exchange rate + postage.
