Yaris, Jazz or something else?

We're in the market for a small, affordable hybrid car and these are our two current favourites.

We live in London and don't currently own a car. Our first baby is due soon and we're anticipating using it for short journeys such as the supermarket and days out, as well as occasional longer trips to see family and for weekends away.

Our priorities are probably reliability, affordability (cheap to run) and safety over anything stylish/fancy. We'd be buying second hand and I've seen the newer Yaris at around £8k but ideally we'd rather spend a bit less.

Our pram is compact so having a large boot isn't essential (I know the Yaris is small) but I suppose it needs to be practical enough for a weekend away with the baby.

Any opinions on the above, or suggestions for others to consider? We're a bit clueless about cars and I'm a recent driver so any other advice is welcome too!

We test drove a Yaris and a Jazz, among other similar cars. Dh was going to be the main driver, and mostly on his own, so he chose the Yaris according to his personal criteria - economy, running costs and reliability, as they were both equally comfortable to drive.

I, as the person who tended to have kids and shopping in the car, would have chosen the Jazz for the simple reason that it had more shoulder space and shopping space. (TBH I don't remember the boot specifically.) But there was definitely more space for passengers in the Jazz. Something to do with the profile of the Yaris sloping inwards more on the upper half of the car. This may of course no longer be the case, it may depend on what model you choose.

I have just (as in yesterday) bought a 2 year old Jazz (ex demo). It's petrol rather than a hybrid though. Moving up from a Micra it certainly feels more spacious and the boot is definitely bigger. And it drives nicely.

It has a green/blue light on the dashboard which tells you if you are driving economically...fascinating!

I live rurally, so I need something to nip round the lanes. It does that.
